Place the outside condenser on a stand above expected snow level. You'll need this snow clearance for reliable operation and to keep the condenser bottom above the ice that forms when the unit goes into defrost. Secondly, place your unit well away from the drip line of your roof's eve to protect it from snow sliding off the roof in the winter or rain water during rainy season. The gable end of a house is often cited as a good compressor location.
