partial side return
Add a overhang “When the glass is set back, you get a reveal, meaning it shades the glass slightly,” Daniel says. This, known as ‘passive shading’, could come in various forms, including projecting eaves or an overhang above the window, like the one seen here. This sort of design will be especially helpful in the summer if the glass is south-facing. “The sun will be too high in the sky to shine directly into the room,” Daniel explains, “but in the winter, when the sun is lower in the sky, you’ll still get the benefits of it warming up your space.”
brise soleil - see advice below re construction & pressures Charles Barclay Architects 4 years ago Hi Rob, the brise soleil is made from galvanised steel and was fabricated by the contractor's steel supplier to our drawings during the build. The 'arms' that project out from the wall above the glazed sliders are made from 6mm plate steel and these are bolted on to the steelwork holding up the facade (this is concealed behind the brickwork). The struts between the arms are 25 by 25 steel angles. It may be possible to get a brise soleil made up as a 'bolt on' to an existing wall but you would need input from a structural engineer to confirm that the brickwork is man enough to deal with the forces that would be put in to it by the cantilever arms.
