Kitchen Alteration
Problems with present configuration:
Small oven- only 4.5 height in oven compartment.
Small cooktop- 8000 BTU on the largest burner. Downdraft vent not very effective.
Passage between breakfast room and kitchen narrows to 22 inch width at one point.
Initially our thought was to replace the cooktop and the oven with a 48 inch range, but as one Houzzer put it- did we really want to replace a mini with a Hummer? Then came the realization that I was going to have to move a wall (thankfully nonloadbearing) to address the 22 inch bottleneck. The change to a 36 inch range became much easier when a BlueStar salesman advised us that there was not a significant difference b/w the Platinum model we were considering (only available in a 48 or 60 inch size) and the RNB. The smaller range also made the wall change less drastic. That will involve creating a 8 inch deep by 80 inch wide alcove where the cabinet housing the oven is.
Next decision is whether to use a contractor to coordinate the plumbing/HVAC/electrical/waste disposal stuff vs arranging for that ourselves. Update- we're using a contractor.
As of 2/8/14 time to start the sink cabinet. Will use same granite as island. Get alternate bid from another contractor (first one seemed high), a friend will contact me with the HVAC for a quote on the hood install. Order the sink as the cabinet structure will depend on the size. Make a butcher block to replace the cooktop. 3/7/14 update- the butcher block is finished. Rather than start on cabinets, began the demo as the contractor will do their part at the beginning of April. Also, I don't want to make cabinets until I'm sure of the precise opening of the alcove area.
Still up in the air are back splash tiles (no subway tiles, no skinny glass tiles). I will do my best to keep my DW's tiles intact to use them again.
