clumping bamboo this one is golden goddess .. clumping so its not supposed to spread. will form a thick screen in one year. and you can clip it into a hedge so its more architectural. but before any bamboo, gotta take care that its not the bamboo that's taking over north shores. these are 'contained'.

if you do a clipped hedge, the fringe tree behind is glorious can also use the large oak leaf hydrangeas -- look how they pop up screen and delight

catnip -- grows lavender from spring to mid summer --- then shear it back for late bloom. the other is bluebeard (caryopteris) and it blooms later so its a nice to and fro. this one has a nice scent

so you have the alpine perch staring you down. what about an open fence or arbor that is strategically placed for climbing something? you could run a big rose over it. but doesnt help in the winter

susquehanna camelllias are just the thing --- less susceptible to blight. the yuletide you likely have at home -- its an upright grower. great to have by your door heading toward winter. likes fine in some shade

fothergilla (dwarf) next to blue star (amsonia) as they're heading to fall. blue star is a great native -- early blue flowers -- then its quietly green when other things are showing off -- n the fall its a wave of golden.

pretty little vignette friendly to wildlife (sans those suspicious looking ever greens). fothergilla blooms late, the big coneflowers are divine (leave up in winter), one statement making grass see if any appeal

winterberry is a must -- lots of sizes and varieties -- the smaller ones will be perfect. native (so mch better than barberry!) and awesome as a focal point in the winter
