Floor-to-ceiling cabinets provide a space for food and utility items, and include a slot for an ironing board, a drying rack and lots of hooks for hanging the wash. The washer and dryer are stacked on top of each other behind closed doors. The really clever bit? The section between the two appliances pulls out to provide a folding surface.
Laundry nook. This broom closet is really a fully equipped laundry station, complete with a washer and a dryer. Mop, broom and cleaning supplies are stored in doors with built-in shelving and hooks. This is really the ultimate space saver, as there is no need for either a stand-alone broom closet or a separate laundry room — this laundry niche does it all.
Ironing board: The client wanted an ironing board but didn’t want it to always be in the way. The solution was a small, white cabinet next to the window that houses a pull-down ironing board. When they are done using it, they just push it up and it’s out of sight. Drying racks: The drying racks next to the ironing board function similarly. The racks pull out from the wall and push back into place when the clients are done with them. The architect bathed the room in Sherwin-Williams’ Waterscape, a cool, calming shade that extends across the rough-sawn pine walls, ceiling and cabinets, enveloping the homeowners in its tranquil embrace. “Don’t be afraid to use the ceiling to evoke a feeling,” Imber says. The same flat paint was used on all the surfaces, so that the cabinets would look more integrated into the room. A cutout backsplash is a fanciful footnote and helps protect the wall from splashing.
