BIM
What is BIM? “Building information modeling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. Not to mention, BIM is only as good as the information that you put into it. In addition, experts can then use this information associate it with corresponding geometries and prepare models for construction scheduling, fabrication, on site spatial management, production control etc.” –Wiki
In another word, create a model(Building,MEP, etc). Yes! It’s simple if you like using software and have creative mind. Keep in mind, In a work place where you work as Structural CAD Technician or Structural Design Engineer things are different than just playing with the commands to create the “dream house” or whatever you want since you are dealing with public safety, law and regulations, Building codes and etc.
Rookie?
Accepting and using any new technology or method, always poses new challenges. Just like the first time I held my first Blackberry phone, IPhone and Google phone and not knowing anything about it. (I don’t know about you but I never used to read the instruction that came with any new products that I have ever purchased in the past because, I was so EXCITED to get my hands on it!) Same concept goes with BIM. I remember my first year in university where I got to learn AutoCAD and Revit for very first time. I was so excited and same time I was terrified.
For those who are just starting to get in university or collage, let me tell you something that you may not know. You think the prof./instructor is actually going to teach you in full details of any subject? the answer is NO! In my whole years of studying I don’t think I have ever had a favorite teacher other than YouTube or other sources and finally myself. If you want to succeed, stop waiting for someone to teach you! go out there and figure out the answer yourself!
There are many educational software that are provided for free from many sources. Autodesk is one of the greatest sources that you can refer to and download the new Revit 2015. If you are the first time user I suggest watching some tutorials on YouTube and other websites like revitcity When I first started to use the software back in university I had no clue of how to use this software. I randomly play with features and commands like wall, window, door and it reminded me of the game The Sims where you could build your house.
Work?
Depending where you live and would like to work, there are many different sectors that you can go and work as BIM Technician, Revit Technician, AutoCAD technician and etc. My suggestion, I recommend developing countries! Do your research and see what works for you the best!
I moved to London, UK from Vancouver, Canada due to lack of jobs. (Thanks to our prime minister Mr. Harper #stopharper) I know there are many jobs in Middle East countries and part of UK (mostly in London) Edinburgh and Glasgow have potential too. Here in London depending on your experience you can earn anywhere from 26,000 GBP to 60,000 GBP.
Thanks for reading and good luck with everything!
