Excellent color pallet. Some drought tolerant choices. No mow/lawn replacement. Pollinator attractors.

Hardy full sun choices. Sticky Monkey Flower. CA native and a perennial depending upon climate zone.
Gorilla hair mulch. Excellent air/water permeability. Matt's down and holds in place if it is hand placed and pressed/tamped down well, keeping soil in place and dust down. Good stuff, but can be a really ineffective mess if just dumped and not correctly applied.
Gravel as grass replacement. A raised bed to cozy up the space. Dahlias, Rudebeckia, grasses, lilacs.
Just love the large scale: large stones; tall, laced out, mature oaks; a color pallet of all greens/blue greens.
Yellow! Plenty of color with non-floral elements!
Ahhh.....
