General Robert E. Lee and his troops camped across the street at Bel Air during their retreat from Gettysburg. Northern scouts slept on Tanglewood’s grounds monitoring the troop movements. At the turn of the 20th Century two sisters built houses next to each other on a hillside overlooking Front Royal. They shared a driveway and put sidewalks between the two houses. The current owners purchased Tanglewood in January 1989 from Sarita Long. She and her family moved to Front Royal in the 1940s when her husband, Jack, became the manager of the new plant. They were the second owners. The property in 1989 consisted of 2.25 acres, an untouched early 1900 Italianate colonial manor house, a three-story, two-stall horse barn and a large chicken coop. The house was on septic and only had two very old bathrooms. The current owners hired Cooper Lecky, the noted architectural firm in Georgetown, to advise them on remodeling the house and turning the barn into a large guesthouse. The planning took almost a year. During that time the owners incorporated the current driveway’s right-of-way into the property, purchased three separate parcels, and integrated them into the plot plan. Then they installed commercial sewer and water as well as new electrical lines to the property.
