Reply to: I think keeping a very minimal furniture profile will help keep not distracting. You can do this by keeping large pieces away from the railing as much as possible. You can face the desk away from the railing so that the chair is all you can see if at all. A low back office chair can help too. Another trick to to use a glass desk and have storage against the wall. Lastly, try not too have wall art that can be seen from downstairs.

Reply to: As someone else mentioned the first decision to make is the function of the room. If it will be an office space that will give you direction. Will comment that the floors are gorgeous and that the space is flooded with natural light. However, you will need lighting at night. So, would suggest that you replace the existing surface mounted lighting fixture and add recessed can lights to give the room a good lighting level at night and also provide good ambient lighting. Would you consider installing a ceiling fan? Those are almost necessary in the south. If the ceiling is textured I would also recommend getting rid of that and having a nice smooth finish instead.
