Wallpaper my butler's pantry! This dark paper is fab!
What if I painted all the base cabinets black except for the cabinets left of the cooktop????
Warm, earthy tones. For a more sophisticated feel, use a palette of warm, earthy tones. This room just wants to hug you.Banquettes are a great way to mix up dining seating, and they can help you squeeze in just one more aunt or uncle at the table.Simple linen seat covers in muddy colors add texture. Add some organic patterned throw pillows for a more comfortable seat and freshen the space with some unfussy green flower arrangements in terra-cotta pots.
A corner island, recently painted olive green, faces the great room; an arched window has been cut out above the sink. The cabinets were previously black, and Kim painted them using a mix of Annie Sloan's Château Grey chalk paint, lacquer and Valspar's translucent glaze in Mocha. Kim and Doug added the tumbled marble backsplash and beadboard wallpaper.Beadboard wallpaper: Lowe's; countertop: Giallo ornamental granite
Industrial bar stools welcome guests from the sunroom into the kitchen, adding a rustic design element to the room's farmhouse style. A pewter-toned bench sits below the kitchen window. Bar stools: Twist Swivel, Cost Plus World Market; pot racks: Pot Racks Galore; cow head: Antique Farmhouse
Style Secret: Gentle WeatheringIn a style that’s intended to reflect longevity and tradition, spanking-new furnishings and accents stick out. Instead, French country calls for a little rust and dust. Painted pieces should feel distressed, as if they’ve withstood years of wear and use. Bypass shiny metals in favor of wrought iron, burnished bronze or pewter, preferably with a few dings and scuffs. You can even get away with a slightly frayed coverlet or a threadbare spot on a pillow.New-world chic: This inviting seating vignette feels as though there’s a story behind every piece in it — it’s like the most stylish collection of hand-me-downs possible. Even the new items whisper of age. The faded colors of the fabrics feel perfectly in step with the patina of the woods.Distressed furniture finishes add charm and warmth
Dark gray also makes the perfect backdrop for light-colored artwork or decorative accessories. You can also use lighting, such as the wall-washing cans here, to draw attention to artwork on a darker wall.
The newest direction in traditional kitchens is to retain the revered traditional sillouettes and cabinet hardware, but mix things up a bit by painting cabinets gray (instead of the expected white) and using brass (instead of the expected brushed nickel). Don't you love this twist?
Tone-on-tone grays in the dining room are sophisticated. The weathered wood credenza takes on a gray hue, and silver metallics in the sputnik light, display objects, and even painted chairs provide a monotone sparkle. Gray paint and wallpaper on the walls all work together for a uniform designer look.
Metal mesh inserts are a great middle ground, giving a slight peek at what’s inside the cabinet but without putting your stored goods on full display.I’ve used mesh inserts instead of glass on many recent projects. It works beautifully in both traditional homes and contemporary designs with some transitional flair, bringing a slight sense of old-world charm.Consider using mesh inserts on the “upper-upper” cabinets in a tall space on a full pantry wall …
Sink and faucet. The sink adds another beautiful material: hammered copper. The faucet, like the cabinet hardware, is oil-rubbed bronze.Lighting. There are recessed lights and undercabinet lighting to keep things bright, while a mix of clear glass and textured glass pendants serves the island and the sink.Look at more copper kitchen sinks
Shades like these (not this color)The breakfast room was one of the first rooms Tanimoto decorated because the family uses it every day. The wife had placed an orange table here at first, but when it proved a bit too bright even for her, Tanimoto moved it to the kids’ playroom. Now the family’s color fix comes from a lime green fabric shade that coordinates with the kitchen accents and a light fixture from Stray Dog Designs. The wicker chairs are more subdued but add an element of warmth and a handmade quality.
White is also a good color choice in a kitchen if you are fortunate enough to have a tantalizing view out your windows. With views like these, you don't want your attention diverted by intense colors or busy patterns and textures on the inside. Also, white works well to balance out black; we tend to favor darker colors set lower to the ground, with lighter hues going up the wall and onto the ceiling.
Barnes carefully optimized the kitchen's space, putting in cabinets and extra storage wherever possible. Even the supports in the center island open: One holds trash; the other, recycling. Pendants: custom Chinese fabric lanterns; range: Viking; hood: Thermador
The kitchen has the same luxe look as the rest of the house, although the cabinetry adds a dark twist. A bank of cabinets over the sink originally took up significant visual space and blocked the light. Barnes took off those cabinets and designed the new ceiling-high cabinets on the right. Countertop: honed limestone; cabinetry: custom, Candace Barnes Design; sink, faucet: Kohler
