More a personal piece, this door reminds me of why I love to build. It is an early Australian Cedar door displayed as a piece of art. The door was saved from a local paddock where the old tin shack that it was originally attached to had all but blown away and cattle on the property were walking on it, leaving embedded hoof marks and all! As an apprentice Carpenter, I worked on the local property ‘Kendall Dale’, the birthplace of Australian Poet Henry Kendall. Here we carefully milled the Australian Cedar slabs sourced from the property around thirty years earlier and used for repairs to the existing historic residence and to reinstate a dilapidated cottage at the rear. It’s beauty to me personally, is not only in its appearance…it has a smell with the first cut that brings back so many memories. With Australian Cedar now rare, these trees can no longer be cut down and need to be preserved. Adam Smith.
