Riven engineered oak doors provide a striking effect on this contemporary kitchen. Silestone worktops around the perimeter of the kitchen contrast nicely with the grey worktop on the island unit. This kitchen features clever storage solutions including secondary drawers within drawers to keep the look uncluttered yet functional, lifting locker door with Blum Aventos HF hinges to give unrestricted access to the cabinet interior and internal larder racking that provides a stylish and practical storage solution. The kitchen also houses integrated appliances such as fridge freezer and dishwasher. A black AGA range provides heat and a Faber Northia hood takes care of the cooking extraction. The brief for this unique kitchen was for it to be ‘a huge piece of furniture’. Well….. challenge accepted. To achieve this goal, we knew that we needed to approach the design from the details outwards, so we started with the cabinet doors. As the kitchen was to be over three levels rather than the traditional two, and because we wanted to articulate the idea of ‘furniture’ rather than ‘kitchen cabinets’, we designed three complimentary cabinet doors, each with their own personalities. Door pulls and pan hooks were made from beautiful hexagonal brass rods, and drawers were lined for cutlery, utensils and cookware. A slim shelf above the splashback provided a place for kitchen essentials like salt and oil. The mid-level of the kitchen was kept clean and uncluttered by means of our signature F+B ‘School House’ off-white lacquer, so that the wood didn’t feel overpowering. But the main event is the truss shelf that spans the open side of the kitchen like a portal frame. This beautifully detailed piece of Japanese-inspired design gives space for the client’s collection of Asian ceramics, and for our bespoke Japanese shoji paper lanterns, which light the space. A unique kitchen, handmade like only a furniture maker could.

We placed the high cabinets and larger elements against the wall that runs through the middle of the apartment. That way we could place the lower cupboards and the more light-weight, wall-mounted wooden shelves in the more luminous part of the room. This optimizes the amount of light coming in while respecting the original stucco in the ceiling and the wooden window sills. In close collaboration with the owners, we chose a smaller radiator and placed it on the wall right by the door, which worked out very well: “It’s small adjustments like this one that make the kitchen feel as if it had always been there,” the owner said.
