About Us

Carol Whitehead is an established professional garden designer and artist who has designed, built and planted gardens for over twenty years working with Clients on a range of varied and challenging commissions. With her quirky artists eye and creative drive, she can turn your garden around, focusing on practical stylish design schemes that can give your outdoor space a new lease of life! She combines imaginative design with functional integrity, creating beautifully planted gardens with an intimate sense of place. Carols design approach involves careful observation of the garden site, working closely with Client and Landscaper throughout the project, to achieve a practical, aesthetic and achievable solution for the garden space. Still an Artist at heart, Carol loves to hand draw her plans. Clients and Landscapers love her hand drawn plans, which are a refreshing contrast to the often generic CAD plans that other designers use. Both drawing processes are equally good off course. Ultimately it is the communication of ideas at every stage of the design process, that is the most important factor for a successful garden project outcome. Your garden project may need a light touch or it may need a complete turn around, with more rigorous design execution: Every garden space and client are different. Offering a hands on service, from initial consultation through to design, build and final planting, she undertakes diverse projects across the South East, throughout East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent and London. Our garden has been transformed by Carol’s imagination and sensitivity to our preferences for a wild-life friendly space. The angles and lines of the old garden have been replaced by circles and curves - not least the pergola and the pond - and the choice of plants has been inspired. We looked at a number of garden designers but Carol’s website and portfolio seemed to fit in with what we thought we would like to do with the garden. The first visit and subsequent design illustration confirmed that this was the person we needed. Carol’s flair and imagination are allied to precision and technical command of what was required for the contractors to enter the scene, build the pond and walls using mostly our old recycled York stone. Effective liaison and partnership with the contractors https://frogheath.co.uk/ were essential and this all worked well. From the initial design stage to completion at the end of the summer Carol was always available to advise and tweak the design while liaising with Belinda who was responsible for the beautiful pergola http://carolwhitehead.co.uk/bespoke-garden-metalwork/ We are delighted with our new garden – the birds love it too, as do various nocturnal animals – and the pond is peaceful and soothing – we already have had five different types of dragonflies visit and lay eggs which are now larvae. The design has altered our connection between the house and garden and encouraged us to spend as much time as possible outside whatever the weather. Carol still advises and encourages. She has a fount of knowledge which she is happy to share with us. We could not have asked for a better designer.

Thank you for helping us transform our garden into a new and exciting space that will provide years of enjoyment! Your vision and attention to detail resulted in a scheme which was affordable yet had all the elements we wished for. I will miss our "garden chats” but am looking forward to carrying out the planting with so much more confidence than I had before. Angela & Jeff Thomas, Rotherfield

Carol has transformed our dull square back garden with its large lawn into a lovely garden and pond. The old York flags were lifted and relaid in sweeping curves that pick up the sight lines from different rooms in the back of the house. Her planting brings fragrance, movement and colour. The choice of trees provides height, colour and texture throughout the year. We are very pleased with her design and planting and we greatly enjoyed working with her throughout.

Carol created “The ornamental kitchen garden- sustenance in the city” for us. We loved her excellent design and she carried it out expertly. She and her team were lovely, enthusiastic, easy to work with and meticulous about leaving the site tidy! Carol is totally unpretentious - a real breath of fresh air! She listens carefully to you and then creates your garden - She is an artist, an excellent designer and extremely knowledgable about plants and sustainability. We invested a lot to restore our Victorian house but the garden project has definitely proved to be the best value. Our garden is amazing. It always looks good and gives us so much pleasure. Carol has even turned us into enthusiastic, grow your own gardeners! Mary Norton and Richard Hale
