About Us

Workshop Collaborative Ltd is an architectural design and make company based in Totnes, Devon, UK. We are a team of specialists including skilled makers, architects and designers, working collaboratively from the first sketch to the final bolt, across a range of scales and sectors from products and furniture to large installations and whole buildings. Since WoCo was established in 2013 we set out to seek ambitious projects: building innovative extensions; making beautiful bespoke staircases for homes we have designed; designing complex mixed-use developments; adapting and restoring historic and listed buildings; designing homes for self-builders and assisting with their construction; several cafe, restaurant and office fit-outs; building exciting spaces for community interest groups. Our shared experience gives us particular expertise in the use of timber, however our wider research and experimentation with materials has led to the use of digital fabrication, metalwork, hempcrete, straw-bale, earth, natural cements and lime construction. Whilst we welcome innovative technologies where appropriate, passive principles of solar orientation, natural ventilation, thermal mass and low-embodied energy and carbon are the underpinning of our sustainable designs. Using our combined experience we develop inventive and lasting solutions that we know we can deliver without compromise. For the client, the result is single-source responsibility for delivery of their bespoke project, offering them greater control of the process and outcomes. For us, our projects bring us unrivalled pride and enjoyment. We offer a refreshing and alternative service to that typically experienced in the wider construction industry. Rather than the design and make processes being separate and disjointed, we believe in uniting the craft, skill and knowledge of each specialist with the resulting synergy being greater than the sum of its parts.

NW Conservation

In my role as heritage consultant, I have worked with Workshop Collaborative on many projects affecting listed buildings and conservation areas, each of which has demanded great sensitivity and understanding. Unfortunately, many architects lack these qualities when working with historic buildings and sites; yet time and again, Workshop Collaborative have shown that they are able to strike the right balance of innovation and respect for the past. On all these jobs I’ve been impressed by the time spent really getting to know each place, their fresh, creative, tailor-made design process, their ability to understand wider context, and the attention to detail and craftsmanship manifest in their work. Currently, we are working on the conversion of an impressive group of listed farm buildings into residential accommodation.

We are currently in the middle of a very exciting project with the workshop collaborative and couldn't be happier with them. They are an incredibly creative team, clearly combining a very sound understanding of the practical side of running a project smoothly, collaborating with reliable building teams, providing good solutions to complex structural issues, have a great understanding of both old buildings and new materials and methods and also offer bespoke craftsmanship, all under one roof. They also offer a very comprehensive service during the planning stages. Furthermore they are just a pleasure to work with, one feels listened to and understood as a client - and they are also incredibly nice to boot. We can genuinely highly recommend this team and are excited to see the outcome of our project.

Really I couldn't be more happy with the job these guys have done for me: the whole process felt like an exciting and creative collaboration. Christian went out of his way to explore elements we discussed in our meetings - he incorporated most of the sensible inputs I made, fed into the ideas creatively (and gently advised against some of the avenues I proposed) and I genuinely feel this was a two-way dynamic - and I know how designers can tend to be about their creations! They are a young team, eco conscious, sensible in approach, grounded, experienced and professional. Highly recommend.

We have worked with Workshop Collaborative for over two years, initially for architectural and design services but, following successful planning permission, project management and specialist joinery design and manufacture. Throughout, the service has been impeccable and the quality first rate. Simon Hampshire has been attentive, innovative and highly professional, leading his own team and coordinating our contractors with a light but effective touch. He has also happily embraced our own, often unorthodox, ideas and design requests. Very impressive.

I have been working with WoCo for the past 2 projects and cannot recommend them highly enough. They have been professional, helpful, knowledgeable and come up with some great imaginative designs. They give great ideas but listen to what the client actually wants to achieve. Great to work with such refreshing talent in such a relaxed and friendly way. We were fortunate enough to work with the Workshop Collaborative on the design of an extension to our family home last year. The process was so smooth and efficient, we felt very involved in the design stages and the team took on board our basic needs for the project spec as well as creating an interesting and contemporary design. I felt supported when working between the design and builders on site and the communication between WSC and the tradespeople was always clear and precise. We were so impressed with the level of detail and effort that went in to the design and the architectural drawings, which definitely made it easier for those on site. On a personal level they were always on the end of the phone and gave clear responses to any questions I had relating to areas of the build. I couldn’t recommend WSC enough and hope to be able to work with them on any future projects.

The guys at WoCo helped design, fabricated an install a sheet metal staircase in our renovation project. The staircase is stunning - a work of art. All the guys at WoCo have been a pleasure to work with and have around the site.

We have just completed a new house build and invited WoCo to design and build a wood and metal staircase for our contemporary home. Our brief was for a striking staircase for the centre of our house using walnut and hot -rolled steel. The whole process was a delight; the team were very creative but responsive to the needs of a functioning, high traffic piece. Their attention to detail is exemplary. We are now the proud owners of a beautiful, striking and functional staircase that is almost a work of art. In light of this success we commissioned WoCo to design and build a 12 seat dining table in similar materials which has been a triumph.

We have worked with Woco on a regular basis for the past 4 years, on several projects ranging from bespoke furniture-making to much bigger architectural projects. The guys are a pleasure to collaborate with - extremely sharp, fast, excellent at finding out of the box solutions, and always working with the greatest attention to detail. We really appreciate their design + build ethos, which helps them to bring beautiful fully-fledged creations to life.
