Sewing room light.

The room I use for sewing has bad lighting. It's centre light that's seems to cast shadows. My eyes are not as good nowadays so anyone could you please help me with just what lighting to use.

Hi ebony2dog are you happy to get an electrician in to do some rewiring or are you looking for something you could do yourself immediately? It seems that as a quick fix you could use some task lighting on your desk as a start. Ideally something with an anglepoise neck so you can redirect the light wherever you need it most. What is your budget? You can get a lovely desk lamp for less than £50 or something really special if you pay a bit more!

I agree with Vivienne that without going to the expense of an electrician popping down lighters or something similar in, the best thing is task lighting angled on where you're working. I have anglepoise lamps for sewing and crafting and couldn't work without them as my eyesight is terrible!
If space is an issue for a desktop version, there are clip ones available (I bought some reasonably priced ones in IKEA)
I also have some small strip lights with three spotlights in them that can be mounted by way of screws but also have strong sticky pads on them (a bit like the lights you can retro fit under kitchen cabinets) The spots on these can be angled too. I got them in Lidl of all places! They work on batteries.

Hi again. Your room is modern, contemporary and elegant and I'd definitely look to soften the look with a pendant light. I can estimate the size of your room and I agree with you, keep it simple and stylish. Quality, is your key here. We've installed one in our bedroom, husband designed and fitted it himself. I was the second pair of hands when needed! Wasn't hard to do but lots of helpful stuff on YouTube. We used LED strips, which along with the transformers weren't cheap but we're really pleased with the result. Good luck. Angie

You can get spotlights or LED strips installed if you want and like the look. It will be a relatively straightforward job for an electrician. Personally I would switch the existing light for a nice pendant, add a freestanding lamp, a couple of table lamps and fit everything with Thread enabled bulbs so you can customise brightness, colour and mood. It would be a much more flexible and adaptable solution for a living room.

Just looking at your picture again, some shelving above or beside your table will give you more space to site or attach lights without taking up valuable desk space. Good luck!

Had look at our local electric shop and had chat with him. We are in the changing all our lights to led. He said to you the White light led on a strip would give good light He showed me just how it would be. Said I would need sun glasses. Think that's the way I'm going. Will cost around £18 for the strip light and the bulds are around £6 each. Thanks for the comments. All helps.

Try a Daylight bulb as it's gentle on the eyes, if you are sewing for long periods,

The problem with any light that is on the ceiling is that it casts a shadow over what you are working on. Try a spot light with long arms so that the spots can be long enough to to reach around you or over you. A task lamp on the desk or a strip light fixed to the wall in front is always a good choice too. Take a look at our website Lighting Company or contact the sales office to discuss.
