Smelly cellar!
Comments (12)Thanks so much for your thoughts on this... The Newton membrane system is the dimpled plastic one that is fixed with plugs. Usually they run down to a concrete slab with a sump and pump, but we have never had any sign of water on the floor despite going through some torrential downpours. We also have a Victorian drain in one corner of the cellar which still works and we are on a steeply sloping site so we have gravity in our favour too as a safeguard. We had a test done and the water table is 1.5 metres below floor level... pouring a slab just seemed a bit of overkill (and a nightmare!) for a cellar that is only ever damp rather than running wet. Maybe I am being naive! Ventilation is worrying me as although it is a semi basement, the ground level is still well above internal floor level so not sure if I can ventilate it? Air heat recovery system sounds great if it will work in our situation. Thanks for the advice on that, I will look into it. Sound, sensible advice as ever from Man About The House! Thank you for giving it some thought. It is hard to dry walls out when covering them in plastic, so I will need to find some way to get some air circulating. Thanks again everyone and please do let me know if you have any more thoughts as and when, as I think I will be battling with this for some time. x Lottie...See MoreCan anyone give me some advice on a leaky chimney?
Comments (4)Thank you gentlemen ... not keen on the spending money idea though! I suppose you have confirmed what i already know. Dropped the ball on this one, so am consigned to arranging candles in the fireplace for now! Worth getting someone round to have a look to see if it can be done from inside. Even when we scaffolded to replace the roof, that was the bit that we risked life and limb to paint the stack on the end of a long pole. The roofers just crawled, which doesn't bode well for pulling up a liner. Thank you for the reality check... Wish I had just left the builders opening rather than fork out on an expensive firebrick! ... you live and learn!... On the upside, our DIY adventure has had so any more plusses than minuses so we will survive!...See MoreHelp! Sick agave
Comments (3)Agree, it could be over watering. I’ve killed plants through over watering, a few pebbles in the bottom of the plant pot may help prevent roots being submerged in water if it doesn’t drain away. Only water occasionally, and let the water drain by doing it in the sink and letting it sit for a while....See Morewhy does my house FEEL bad?
Comments (45)Just wanted to say that this is a very interesting discussion. @1111x you know your own tastes in decor and it’s well presented. Others will always have their own opinions. I think we’re polar opposites as i‘m nearly always living amongst clutter...mostly hubby’s computer and brewing equipment (drives me crazy) but so long as it’s clean and comfortable I’m happy. Do houses or people leave an energy or aura....no idea, but possibly as I’ve heard many circumstances of it. The feng shui thing I find interesting. From your photos I noticed a couple of things. By the dining table you have a small window but grand curtains that are sort of framing the radiator, kind of makes you focus on what is a bland (yet necessary) object. Then others have picked up on the mirrored tv cabinet, it’s a lovely cabinet but I’m not sure I’d want to be staring at my knobbly knees and ankles when I’m watching tv 🤣. No idea if things like that are feng shui faux pars, would be interesting to research further but by all means ignore me if you like things as they are. Good shout on the humidity, we tend to leave windows open upstairs throughout the day as we find it really helps with the airflow not to mention the heat from 3 computers running at full pelt every day. Stay safe and hope your home finds its happy. 😊...See More- 19 years ago
