Compost Bin Pictures

I'm testing (and learning) how to insert photos so I though I'd do a real test. The other compost bin pictures thread sorta took it's own path so I thought I'd start another one. I feel like I'm adding pictures the hard way and the small way. I know I have posted in the past with larger pictures, but don't remember how, does anyone have easy instructions?

You'll need to select the larger size in flickr. Assuming you use the "Share This" and "Grab HTML/BBCode" options. There's a menu of image sizes there to select from. If you don't use this option, you might try it. Then you can get a big picture like this:

This will give you a link to the image, and not the image itself directly on the page. So people will have to click it to see it. The good thing is that visitors don't have to load the image if they don't want to see it. Particularly return visitors who have already seen it.

a few pictures of my bins.. outdoor bin took the back seat this summer as the worms started eating all the kitchen scraps......

If you want privacy at the front of your home to stop people to seeing in, then you could either change your gates to completely enclosed the area and have a CCTV system set up so visitors can alert you when they arrive. Or preferably, you could separate the two drives by erecting a fence between the two garage doors and plant a nice tall hedge 3/4 of the way along the front boundary to obscure the view of the main house. You could then reverse round the hedgerow and park the car at an angle so it is partially obscured by the hedgerow, with CCTV and security lights shining down from the top of the garage to give you peace of mind. It would be lovely to remove the gates and be able to look out of your front door and see the hedgerows, and they would also help to muffle the sound of the traffic

I've never seen rats near my compost. But I don't throw in any meat or cooked food, only peels, grass, weeds, leaves and small twigs and such, maybe that helps. I have this plastic bottomless container in the back of the yard. Not the best composter, if you'd ask me, but it was there when we bought the house. It takes about a year for the stuff to poperly deteriorate, I flip the contents by the end of summer and have nice black mulch in spring. Lots of worms in it, so it must be doing fine. And since we also separate plastic, paper and glass, my regular waste is reduced drastically.

Definitely made to order and a tidy job too - not the most practical for cleaning or inserting bin liners in place though. Finding a large pull-out single bin system for a 600mm cabinet is a bit of a struggle though as we've tried to find a few of them - might be worth finding a freestanding bin and inserting it into a pull-out drawer similar to this idea:

A simple method. Raw stuff goes in on the right (4'x6'x4') and in Spring I turn it to the left. Might fine tue it by adding more C or N or water at that time. In fall I spread it around. I use 2"x3" vinyl coated metal mesh and fence posts. The mesh is several years old and looks to have several more years left.
