Why not use Ikea hinges? I just got an "aftermarket" Blum hinge for one of my cabinets, but it was because I wanted a larger opening angle, 170 degrees, instead of the 125 degree that Ikea offers.

that's why I titled this IKEA/Blum -- the IKEA hinges are made by Blum, aren't they? Which ones are they -- Rationell?

The IKEA hinges may be fine - I was just asking if that's what I should get. If they're good quality, then that's what I'll get (I assume they have soft-close ones?)

Ikea hinges are good quality, yes. There are legitimate criticisms of Ikea kithcen stuff, but the hardware is not among them. And the hinges are spec'd for much heavier doors than you're using in this case, which is all the more reason not to worry about quality/durability.

And yes, Ikea also carries clip-on soft close dampers. They only work on the 125 degree hinges though. Also note that the soft close dampers are sold separately.

Ikea also sells 153 degree opening hinges, in addition to their standard 125 degree. For a 4.5" door, you might be fine without hinge dampers.

Integral 125 degree hinge is 701.323.75

and

Integral 153 degree hinge is 501.058.63

Just happen to have some on hand since I'll be hanging doors in the next week or two... HTH

Ironically, I've found the opposite to be true.

When cabinet doors close, they push/compress air into the cabinet, which creates a positive pressure inside the cabinet, and a resultant back pressure on the door. The total force on the door is pressure delta * door area, and the total torque about the hinge is proportional to pressure delta * door area * door width. So the wider and larger the door, the more "air damped" it will be.

I have cabinet doors in my house ranging from ~8" to 24" wide, and the smaller ones slam shut without hinge dampers, but the larger ones do not.

I appreciate all the advice! (if I had found a pull-out I thought was worth the money for that narrow space, I'd have done it instead, but I didn't)

GauchoGordo's explanation makes a lot of sense, and is confirmed in his own experience, doesn't get more clear than that! Here's the part number for the Ikea hinge dampers (which come as a set of two, one damper snaps onto each hinge):

I know what you mean about the frustration of those small spaces. I originally had one that was 6" and didn't like any of the options, so I chose to go up from 30 to 36" on my sink base since that option also allowed for a bigger sink.

Ha ha - yes, season ticket holder since day one!

I haven't done a true reveal -- there's not that much to reveal, it's a very small kitchen! We have a few odds and ends to complete (stainless toekicks, repair a trim piece that one of the workers screwed up, install a remaining cabinet door) and then I will. If there's some reason you want to see it sooner though, just let me know and I can email you some pictures.

Thanks for offering to send pics via email. We're not in a rush here. Still 5-6 months away from start of build. Not my build, my inlaws. But I wanted to show my SIL your kitchen. From the island overhang thread the layout seemed very functional in a small package. The SIL is building a very open concept energy efficient contemporary. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss the reveal. Small kitchens need the reveal too!

(Says the woman who is still waiting on tweaks etc before posting her own reveal even though the construction has been finished for a while)

The layout is extremely functional! It seems like I never have to walk more than 4 steps unless I want access to something in the pantry, which is around the corner and down 4 steps. We still have a lot of empty space in the kitchen itself, and are still figuring out what to relocate FROM the pantry into the kitchen proper.
