Hello,
You are right, you could have a mirror on the wall to make your space look bigger and brighter or why not hang framed photos?
Your conversion also depends on Styles you like or how you wish to combine them. For example I very much like Scandinavian style or Rustic combined with Contemporary Style. Which are your favourites?
Also, you could add a lamp or some great light installation can be also the solution to get more light to your space.
How about some cool Wallpaper?

I don't know what the rest of your house is like but you could make more of a feature of the actual stairs. Just go for a new handrail and wall paint colour that coordinates with the rooms off of it and try something like this, not necessarily this bright! If the storage on the landing isn't staying you could also add a bookcase wallpaper. I have place names on my basement stairs from countries we've visted. It would look ridiculous on my main stairs given the period and style of the rest of the house but if your decor is modern etc something like this could work?it doesn't have to be books or place names, maybe get creative for something that is meaningful to you

like the rope handrail idea. If you're exhausted climbing up to bed that might be fun.
if it were me i'd be partial to some dado rail height dramatic colour to highlight the very nice curve of the staircase hallway, make it a bit more of a feature. it's an idea you can do either in a traditional or a modern way depending on the materials used. Or, I'd go a darker muted colour on the walls and paint the stairs a bright white, again to make them stand out and show them off.
- 11 years agoHi Corrina I have a similar style staircase which is very high. I have just finished mine and I'm thrilled with the results. I will try and send some photos.

- 11 years agoThe photo doesn't show the length of the wall as you walk upstairs but it is as high as yours.

Original Author11 years agoThank you everyone for your lovely images, inspiration and comments! I really like the rope I am worried though as our stairs are very very steep. I love the butterfly wallpaper that looks beautiful. I really like the idea of using lighting and I may make a large wallhanging. Perhaps go for a Scandinavian design though out. I look forward to updating this area and I'll add images to show you all thank you again KV XO
