Help me with mirrors

Please help me with what type of mirror and lighting to go above my vanity. I was going to go with sconces but can't as the sinks are too far to the side of the vanity. it's a 72'' vanity. is my only option just a plain mirror above the entire area?

My favorite look for a long vanity is a narrower mirror. I like the proportions of the two, and you have just the right space to insert a narrow mirror. You could use a flat 2" white or walnut frame or go frameless. That would be my first choice. If you prefer frameless, on an open wall like yours, I prefer beveled frameless mirrors for a more finished look, but that leans a little more traditional.

If your backsplash is tall, you'd have to rest the mirror on the backsplash. If you only extend the mirror to the sink edges, you may get away with not having to move your outlets, or you may have to move them only a little. Mock it up to see how a mirror would fit. Then use contemporary bar sconces over the mirror. I wonder if they used three smaller sconces here, which lights the middle of the counter too.

That's a beautiful vanity. We have a 60-inch vanity with the same issue (sinks far to the left and right). We went with a full wall mirror but have the lights above each sink protruding through the mirror. I can post a picture tonight.

Like Emmeline, I also think the mirror can stay, but you need to lower it a bit. Try to leave the same space between the ceiling and the top of the mirror as between the mantel (??) and mirror bottom. Otherwise, nice looking kitchen!! :))

The thing that strikes me when I look at your room and the kitchen, is that it's quite a collection of different styles. I think the key thing you could do to calm it down is to pull the colours together. I mocked something up to show you what I mean. I didn't go for a mirror that reflects all the different things, but for a painting with the red of the chair, the green of the plant and curtains, the blue of the tiles. I also painted the dining chairs blue. And changed the light in the kitchen to pewter pendants. I also gave you bar stools that are less country in style. Hope it helps.

Pity the person using the sink to the left in your photo. No elbow room. You may as well mirror the whole wall and put your scones through the mirror where you have the electrical boxes. The only option I see is one very large mirror over the center of the vanity with same sconce positions.

My sink is that close to the wall and it's not a problem at all.

I guess I will take that sink. I have smaller arms and I'm right handed so don't need much left hand space :)

It's so pretty. I agree with a full width mirror and you can buy mirrored outlet covers that would help hide the boxes. The wires look low for a non sconce application, so just be sure you have that figured out if you're going to either run the mirror up to the light fixtures or through the mirror.

Your vanity is gorgeous. I love everything about it, esp. the tonal variations.

I agree with everyone else about a full mirror (unframed) with lights coming through. Second choice is lights above the mirror. I have that arrangement and there isn't really a face-shadow problem.

I'm so glad to see this thread! We are in the same situation. What height are you thinking for the lights-through-the mirror situation? Sconce or overhead?

our situation is slightly complicated by a clerestory window over the sink. Not sure how to arrange everything.

Here's a picture of our vanity (60") with two sinks, full mirror, and two LED sconces coming through the mirror. It has worked out very well.

I take it back. Sconces won't work. The boxes are directly over the sinks -- bump your head? Just two sconces along the sides of the mirror won't provide enough light. Do a full wall mirror + illumination all along the top.

I think mirror height is just a style. Do you mean is there a standard for overhead light placement? I think someone asked once and we all measured ours to be around 80" from the floor.

Have you googled clerestory window in bathrooms? And Houzzed it? I saw a photo of the mirror brought right to the window molding with sconces set into the mirror. Will that work for you?
