Something missing in my lounge?

Hi... I've been doing my lounge up on a budget (thanks Ikea and charity shops!) but still feel something is missing? I'm wondering if I need some grey/yellow/gold cushions or something else colourful?

I would love some opinions! Thanks

i agree that you need some art. The reason is that there is nothing at eye level plus you could do with introducing an accent colour. Try getting stretched canvasses. These are inexpensive on auction sites and are not heavy and therefore need very little to hold them up to the walls.

I would love to however I'm not convinced my plaster will survive it! Tried propping up some frames against various surfaces but its just not the same!

The colours aren't quite right, if my monitor is correct, but they aren't horrible. Your walls should have more pink undertones, rather than yellow, to truly match the floor. But, honestly, I think you should completely decorate and then see what you think. Do you have enough storage in your main bedroom? If not, I would put a large chest of drawers and then that same mirror hung horizontally above it, with a vase, or other couple of small, colourful pieces on it. If storage isn't an issue, a large fabric ottoman with the mirror horizontal would be nice and add warmth. Make either the drawers or the ottoman centred on the wall when the door is closed but obviously they can't be so large you can't open the door. That will give the wall harmony. If that is the wall you are staring at every night from bed, ditch the mirror and find a really nice piece of art that you will love to look at just before you nod off.

Tani I really love your cabinet it adds so much warmth to the room with the dark navy and I don't feel it clashes with your floor at all. I like your animal skin rug but perhaps a larger one in Tan and creamy white would help pull the woodwork, metal vase and floor together and give it nice balance. Not sure what colours you like but you could try some velvet or textured oranges with the navy as the tones are similar to the wood and then add some neutral beige or cream with it. Have you tried your mirror above your new cabinet it may help the balance with the TV one the opposite side. I feel a mantle peace will make a difference in white or antique white. Then add a canvas or painting that has all the tones you decide on in your room with some strong accent colours like the orange with the greens and yellows from your other rooms that will tie the two together. What ever you decide on I'm sure you will have fun. Take your time and good luck, most of all have some fun with it.

Liking the idea of the addition of the music collection and some music posters on the wall but if this isn't your type of thing then the sports theme would be good, maybe have some pictures of your favourite team or players and then highlight this with some feature lighting perhaps? You can create some nice lighting additions without making it too feminine :-) Or another idea would be to have some movie posters up on the wall?

In my opinion it is that visually you have everything going on on one side of the space only. In my opinion you should put a floor to ceiling rectangular mirror on the wallpaper wall and choose a frame that doesn't compete with the paper.... Perhaps a soft white? I would also be looking for a small circular table on a pale circular rug with a low hanging light fitting above. Then I would put the shelves where the big plant is and try the small plant stand in front of the window. I don't mind the chair but think you need something bigger on the wall behind.

You can get adhesive pads for light art. I would add cushions in mustard and teal and pick it up in the art. I think a mirror would also look good and bring in some light but you'd need to go for a leaning one which aren't particularly cheap! Maybe bring the chair out of the corner angled slightly towards the sofa more and pop the lamp behind. If you have the money I would invest in a coffee table and accessorise. Maybe also paint the radiator to match the ŵall? It's looking really good though!

Love the idea of canvasses! Didn't think to look into them! I might need to invest in a proper chair in the corner but in the meantime I'll have a go at pulling it out a bit. I'm lucky that I have massive windows which catch all the afternoon light but can get a bit dark in the morning, a mirror will definitely help this.

Definitely have to go cushion hunting this weekend! Thank you!

I would choose one of two options...

Either, brighten the space with highlights of yellow (for some ideas on how to introduce some colour take a look at a recent show flat I did for Chevron). I agree with the advice that you really need something at eye level, a contemporary piece in shades of white would be great.

Or, go for a very contemporary but glamorous look by introducing some metallic elements. This will get light bouncing around the space. The idea of a free standing mirror is a good one, alternatively you could use a montage of smaller mirrors placed closely together. You could also add some metallic textures on cushions, vases and picture frames. If you're on a budget, try selecting a series of black and white prints (drawings or photos), use white mounts to keep it light, and add brushed nickel frames, in a variety of styles.

Love both the metal elements and the bright ideas! Will have a look this weekend whilst shopping and see what jumps out at me. You can't see in the photo but my light shades are black with copper in the centre so maybe the metal would work. Thanks!

I have an old cocker spaniel so the dog idea is fully implemented already :)

This is what I started with (if you're interested) bright red with matching pinky red carpet and 3(!!) different shades of cream. The skirting board was actually trunking when we moved in. Should have taken the pictures above with the blinds up though for some more light!

Hi , your lucky enough to have a nice big area behind your TV , that area is going to be the focal point in the room . I really like these "media walls" we have built a few for a interior designer and the clients love them . The one with the scooter in we built our selves . I'm hoping to building these full time . I think they look great , and there's so many options and finishes to choose from . Very impressive features !

If you you can't hang pictures you could use bright wight wall decals to conterbalance the dark hues you already have... Also you could put a string of fiary lights or bright white leds behind the TV as a cheap way of mimicking the floating panel in one of Ilan's photos above.

I would suggest looking at wall art stickers which can really enliven a space (see the images below from one of our projects).

If your on a budget , a really classy look can be base easily , if you picked up various size floating shelves , or even the same size . They must be the same colour match !!! Black gloss in your case I would suggest . You can arrange them in abstract manor around your TV . If you really want to push the boat out , you can fix a few low to the floor around 600mm and fit led lighting underneath the far end of the shelf . It would work best with a dim warm white glow .

I love your rug, great colours and geometric design and you've got the sofa in just the right place to make a cosy room divide, great job:) I would definitely add something to the walls, love some of the 'wall art' available. Would also suggest you can get photos printed onto card, which would be lightweight enough to stick to your walls. Keep your colour palette limited to colours from your rug:) Enjoy!

Some really lovely ideas!! I really love the idea of making the area around my TV more of a focal point with shelves etc. I do worry about my plaster breaking up around it though! I suppose if it started to crack I could help it on its way and have some exposed brick :)

Think I might bite the bullet and have a go hanging some real pictures on the wall and see how it goes. My rug has grey/blue/gold hues so will go find some accessories in the mean time to start pulling the room together.

Loving how you've created this so far - how about a Malham Pewter Stone pod from mellow Duck - would compliment the colours and rugs well and give the room a lift. You can effectively create your own piece choosing shape and fabric without breaking the bank...

Hello,

Colours are definitely missing that you could mix and match and also attract your view. Some yellow, gold, red, green would look nice. Maybe pick one colour and add some accessories, repeating the same colour.
