Dining room makeover advice
Hi, we've moved into a house and we need to change up our dreary dining room and I'm drawing a blank on what we could do with it. The rest of our home has all dark wooden floors and this is the only carpetted room and the only room we're having trouble with redecorating.
It's a rental, so we are limited to:
- Cannot change the carpet
- Paint must be a "neutral-ish" colour
- Shelves must remain
The only furniture in there right now is an American Oak table and some temporary chairs (which could be nice if painted). We can replace the table if neccessary.
The pale
wall colours and the cream carpet make this room quite insipid.
Can anyone suggest colour schemes or design approaches to take with this room.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

Comments (4)I think this should work well as a concept, but a lot if it's success will hang on the quality of the finish, and getting the right doors will be critical to that. There is absolutely no reason you cannot keep the period charm and still get good performance. A set of Accoya doors with high performance glazing and a good multipoint locking system will offer all the security, thermal efficiency and longevity of aluminium or pvc, and still allow you to keep the period detailing. Comments (8)I’m not sure if this is your kind of thing or what colours you like etc. I quite like the different blues together for the chair and sofa but the chair also comes in primrose and mustard. I’d add a yellow/mustard cushion/s for the sofa anyway. The coffee table is actually a burnished gold but the pic isn’t very good. I like the shelves idea, I’d add the chair here angled towards the sofa. The last pic is an Ikea hack of kitchen units just as an idea for the tv, their horizontal units should be about the right viewing height if floated. I’d have a floor lamp one side of the sofa and tray table and lamp the other. I’d probably just go a lighter shade of the wall colour for curtains but depends on chair colour etc. The cushion is from bluebell gray and they’ve got some lovely things if it’s your style...See MoreDining room advice
Comments (13)Do you have a photo of the wall opposite the fire? i think the issue is the furniture in front of the cupboards, as they're blocking them it doesn't visually look right IMO. Could the cabinet and the tv go on the wall opposite the fire? I don't know whether this would be in budget (or practical re storage) but converting the cupboards to shelves could work? I would accessorise the side table and add some stems on the dining table, some scandi style place mats would also soften it and add some pattern ( in a different colour to shown). The lamp from Dunelm might work rather than the one in the photoshop. I think the art is too big. I would hang a rectangular piece in line with the end of the table. For paint, I might look at an olive (if bookshelves aren't in budget paint the doors and radiator in the wall paint) and then just have linen roman blinds...See MoreClosing off living room/dining room advice (pictures included).

10 years agoI would paint the walls and woodwork white - do you think the landlord would let you paint the shelf brackets white so that they disappear into the walls? Would make a big difference. Then just add pops of colour with chairs, curtains, art, maybe a rug - anything that can be taken with you. Here's a few inspiration pics but not necessarily styles or colours I'm suggesting for you, just to give a flavour of what I mean:
