Our new apartment

I have just bought a new apartment. There is a mocha feature wall in all rooms. We are finding it hard to decide a colour for the entrance wall. The tiles on the floor are cream and the wall is directly opposite the door. We want the entrance area to look bright and at the same not look completely different to the entire apartment

Be careful- consider what it will look like in electric light. Cream will look yellow and brilliant white could look sterile as there is typically no furniture.
Personally I would put in lots of ceiling spotlights and then paint it with a paler version of the living room...... So find a paler version of the mocca- remember that there are always lots of doors in hallways so the colour will frame them.

Hey thank you for your advice. That sounds good. This hallway doesn't hve any other doors though .. It flows into the entrance of the open plan living room. I am also thinking of putting a thin table there with some flowers in a vase. Would that look good?

Hi Kieth. With that combination you have many options. What overall look are you aiming for, do you know? Something modern, I would guess, based on the table? Also, are you able to post pictures of the area and table? As a start, you could have a coffee/side table in the living area match the style of the dining table, and black shelving/units if you plan on building some. Not all should be high gloss though, that can get overwhelming... What are your thoughts on black and white decor? some love it some loathe it, but a white sofa might work if you like it. You could also get neutral "greige" seating... or bold seating, perhaps a dark navy sofa? what paint/paper do you have on the walls, or do you plan on changing that? Christine, wow, that's a ton of ideas, thank you very much! We already thought of these sockets with USB included, and will definitely get those for all desk and bed areas. It's such a small improvement but I am so excited about it already! Also love your suggestions for hiding cables. I hope we won't have to (rather have all cables in the walls and have them come out where we want them to) but if that's not possible, in particular around the fireplace area then this will be very valuable, so thank you. Not so concerned about soundproofing the floor - we live in a similar flat right now, hardwood floors and underfloor heating, and we walk around in socks with no issues. It is more the kids' bedrooms that are facing the fireplace that I am concerned with. Son is playing online games with kids from around the world and well, yes, there is a lot of screaming that comes with that. Sitting right in front of the doors won't be very relaxing for us when he yells on top of his lungs "FXCK YOU!!!" (and yes, I do tell him off). I love the partitioning, wall slider, shelves gallery - definitely something to investigate later. I think we may have to move in first to get a feel of the space. I don't want to cram it with furniture and create a maze if not needed. But it may help regulate the space and make it cosier. As for the TV placement, if you have a look at the photo I just shared, we are thinking about either having a TV shelf with a smaller TV (not 55 inch as we have now) or maybe a bracket or pole solution which we mount to the side of the fireplace if the brickwork (I believe it's bricks, will need to check) does support it. This would allow us to move the TV set around so that we can watch from different angles. But when looking at the fireplace as it is right now I think the architect envisioned the TV mounted right there on top.

Hello hinasrivastava,

Enjoy the new apartment!... With the feature wall in every room... If the colour is not to your liking, then why not choose something you love or that you feel would work with a scheme you have in mind.. You could then do the same and then with the hallway.. Perhaps do something on a smaller scale..

Depending on the area of course.. Other ways to introduce colour to tie in, would be the furnishings... Perhaps you want to have baby blue and old silver.. So possibly some furniture in old silver or a mercury glass lamp base and baby blue shade.. Just an example but accessories too can pick up a mood or colour, especially for emphasis..

If you have a lot of doors in the hall and they are dark wood or you don't want to notice them... paint them the shade of the walls so they blend.. Indeed any doors you would rather blend into the seams of the home, can be treated in this way..

Equally they can be made to stand out.. See what you feel is right to do.. One thing... Pendant or wall lights could be nicer than spot lighting simply because it is not so clinical and a lovely feature pendant or several in a cluster with some wall lighting to accent does really give an impact and atmosphere..
