How to fix damaged solid oak floor?

Moving to a new house which has a lovely solid oak floor in the kitchen, but there is a spoilt patch in front of the sink, from dampness getting in. Please could you let me know the easiest & most cost-effective way of fixing this? (without replacing the whole floor)

If the oak has gone black it is unlikely you will get it back.
Allow it to dry out fully then sand the surface and see if it gets paler underneath.
Depending on what the original floor finish is will depend on whether you need to re sand the whole floor to achieve a uniform colour.

However as a temporary measure, dry it out, sand it back and re-seal with either a uv matt varnish or a hardwax oil. Follow the instructions on the product tin.
Back to the black... Oak has tannins which react with water and turn the timber black. This can seep down through the whole plank( you see it most often on worktops around the taps). If this is the case you will be better getting in a joiner/ floor fitter to replace these areas.

Hello Camille, I suspect that the problem in this case was from failure to follow instructions. The instructions say two coats, and in this case vixbath admits (in the comments) that they only put one coat on before the floor was exposed to water. I'm sure we've all thought we could get away with something like that (I know I have, anyhow) but it does mean this isn't an accurate reflection of how well Osmo works. When I did my worksurface with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil the two coats went on very differently. The first soaked straight in and the second sat on the surface. From the way the two coats behaved I wouldn't expect a single coat to be completely waterproof. Also, I am very pleased with the finish and scratch resistance of the Fiddes and would use it on a floor. You would need to source as close as possible the width and depth of the original oak. You would then prep it and the area to be laid and lay it. After that you would need to sand the whole floor back maybe using a rougher sand to the patched in area in order to colour match. It's essential that you match the colour as close as possible to allow for a uniform colour when the whole is sanded. If you do a rough sand and the floor is patchy and it works well on hiding the patched in section you could always leave the floor with a less than perfect finish to give a more rustic look. As for the concrete underneath it does look pretty level. Where is looks uneven is where the new unit would be so it won't affect the laying of the floor. ***Just notcied that you would probably have enough of the original flooring left to patch in successfully - therefore use the original flooring.***

One or two observations: Oak breathes, in as much as when wet it will expand and when dry it shrinks, that's why it is good for boat and barrel building, when wet the gaps close up and make it watertight. What that means for a worktop is that unless the wood is stabilised (soaked through with epoxy) it will expand and contract, if glued to the granite that means when expanding it will warp, staying still where the glue is and bending downward, not much but it will. Perhaps a less porous wood could be better, bamboo is good, then, if the counter top end is flush, you could screw and/or glue a stout batten of matching material to the end of the counter to add support ( extend it out past the front of the counter to ad support to the overhang) then glue the block to the granite with epoxy and screw up through the batten.

“The GM saw this, apologized and said he would make it right.” If they’ve said they will make it right then my next step would be to arrange a sit down to walk and talk through the issues (make sure to document the issues before the review so you don’t forget any). Then set an agreed date that you expect the issues // snagging to be resolved and make sure to keep lines of communication open and regular contact while the work takes place. Most contractors are decent people and will work with you (within reason) to get a good finish to the work. One thing I’d advise is to make sure to document any and all communication (follow up phone calls / face-to-face with an email confirming everything you talked through), not that it will end bad but you need to build in a contingency plan which could result in small claims court, meaning you put yourself in the best position possible if you need to present a case.
