I think the problem is the door height doesn't match anything else and the display items need more thought. You could fit a full height door and just use it for storage but personally I would take the door off and either fit more glass shelves but just display 1 object on each shelf- probably glassware. Alternatively white shelves and fill it with books. I would have the family pictures professionally mounted and framed so they all work with each other and then give them pride of place on a wall.

It's a lovely room. I think I would just remove the shelves and add a large square piece of art over the fire so that becomes more of a focal point. I had been thinking that you could paint all the alcoves (including tv) in F&B pelt. It would look lovely against the chaise. You could then add contemporary art over the fire with a splash of deep purple or mustard or both. However the ceiling beam is throwing me as I would do that white so it becomes part of the ceiling and without seeing the LHS of the room it may cut that side off. It could work though (?!). It's obviously a very dark colour but you may like it as you want a cosy feel. I might also try moving the chaise away from the cabinet a few inches and angle it a little towards the sofa?

I'm inclined to agree with Jonathan but if you do want to go with the chimney concept and want a bit more variation to the 'shape' of the wall then there are a few things you could do. We've got an actual chimney breast and have put occasional bench seating either side with hidden storage below, which is super useful for times of year when we have extra visitors and need a few extra seats for bottoms! (Excuse the empty holes in the middle- waiting for our log delivery!) If you thought carefully about the actual chimney breast higher up I guess it depends on what you want above it- a large mirror or picture could easily be put up on top concealing a cupboard door behind it for hidden storage. Alternatively you could have the 'sides' of the chimney breast with hidden doors (push close / push open) to storage, so long as you think carefully about what height your shelves are at and avoid the doors opening into them. I always think books look quite nice in fireplaces, especially if you paint the inside a bold colour as a backdrop to them. I'm sure there are lots of other options too! Hope it helps! Claire
