Living room alcoves and fireplace

Hi
What do I put in the two alcoves and over fireplace? Please help. My living room is about to be painted elephants breath, F&B. It is a north facing room and the feel I am trying to achieve is a cosy yet contemporary room. The alcoves are very narrow 14cm deep so these shelves are pointless. The sofa on the other side of the room is a velvet silver grey.

Do i put wall art in the alcoves, if so what, a painting ? Do I put old paintings with gold frames or black and white, a Book shelf wall paper.... Any advice would great. Thank you

It's a lovely room. I think I would just remove the shelves and add a large square piece of art over the fire so that becomes more of a focal point. I had been thinking that you could paint all the alcoves (including tv) in F&B pelt. It would look lovely against the chaise. You could then add contemporary art over the fire with a splash of deep purple or mustard or both. However the ceiling beam is throwing me as I would do that white so it becomes part of the ceiling and without seeing the LHS of the room it may cut that side off. It could work though (?!). It's obviously a very dark colour but you may like it as you want a cosy feel. I might also try moving the chaise away from the cabinet a few inches and angle it a little towards the sofa?

I like idea 1 with white shelving and walls, and red paint inside the alcoves - we had something similar in our old house and it worked really well (although we actually had blue tiles inside the fireplace). If it's north facing I would go for a warmer white (not cream) which will help bounce light around, and the red alcoves and fire surround will make it cosy in the winter. For my taste the all over red is too dark - might be nice in winter but not for the summer. The grey painted one does look nice in the picture but I avoid grey on principle ;-) I like the fabric but since the tiles are in situ I would be coordinating paint with tiles and fabric with paint in that order! I think fabric with a rich blue might look really nice too.

It depends on what else you have in the room, the sofa colours etc. It looks to be a really nice room with some lovely features. Personally, I wouldn't paint it all a blue or a dark colour as East facing rooms can be gloomy on an afternoon. Have a look on instagram, there is a total shift away from dark interiors towards more neutral warmer ones. Not that this matters, but perhaps a year of lockdown has made a difference to what people want to live with.

Pic below taken from kitchen. The idea would be to take the first alcove, which TV unit is in, leaving single alcove and chimney (initially; would possibly replace fire in future) and put sofa under window to make a small snug room. Thanks!
