Lounge diner with awkward door position
Comments (2)Does anyone actually play the piano? If not move it out of the room. If yes can you move it to the "awkward space"behind the "awkward door", I hope it wont hinder access to the 2 light switches in that corner. Can the door near the armchair be made to open outwards instead of inwards into the living room? If yes then move the piano to that area instead repacing the armchair. Once piano is out of the way try and see if dining table can be rotate to fit in that space, if so you will have gained some space in the living area. Get rid of the fireplace and mirror and wall-mount the TV in that position. Will allow TV to be seen from seating position and minimise glare or backlight in case you open the windows in the dining area or in the sitting area. If you placed the piano in the armcahir's place you can keep the current sofa and its configuration. Move armchair to current TV console position. This will create a centre area for kids. It would appear to me your kids are quite young. You might consider investing in a thick heavy rug to place in the central place area. For side tables i would suggest nesed sidetables which you can keep in one area and remove and use as an when needed. (inserting an image later) If you moved the piano in the awkward space. I would suggest investing in a new slimer sofa or instead in a series of discrete seperate armscahirs whcih can be moved about easily. Oh and too maximise space i would have gotten rid of the table based lighting and preferred wall mounted ones. Similarly wall fixed shelves rather than tables, especially with babies to avoid the risk of things being pulled over. (one of the other reason i would suggest wall mounting the TV rather than getting another console)....See MoreOur new kitchen/lounge - downtlighters
Comments (2)My update The electrician has fitted Designa DE94213CH down lights and Ebrite LDB500WW lamps. He is refusing to change them to LED housing and lamps. What problems are waiting for me down the line with this combination....See MoreA lounge with a more contemporary feel
Comments (9)Hi Amanda The thing to think about is how you use the space (and what you really want to use space for) - is the dining room used every day or just at Christmas; in the living room do you use it to watch tv or mainly to sit around doing crafts or chatting to friends. Also it looks like the dining room is the bigger of the two rooms? I personally wouldn't remove the doors, because although it looks cool in photos from California, in the UK the reality is that it just makes hard to heat and noisy rooms. If like most of us the dining room is not used for dining every day I would consider swapping it into the smaller room and incorporating storage for a home office or crafts room there to make the space useful all year round. Then the living room can have the space it needs to have the two sofas either at right angles to each other or facing each other and get the tv in a nice position to view it or hide it in a cupboard if it's not watched much. If you are going down the grey route I wouldn't go crazy with it, farrow and ball's 'shaded white' looks cream in daylight but grey under artificial light. Whatever colour you choose I would paint both rooms the same to give some continuity because you can see through those doors....See MoreAdding Lighting to Lounge
Comments (6)You could splice a rain / beading / small coving just below the original to hold an LED strip light, it makes a good ambient light source. You could also use some wall sconces instead of lamps, if you don't want to go to the hassle of channelling the wire (I wouldn't blame you) you could have them wired with a cloth bound flex with a plug and switch. I've done that myself so I can easily move them around if I want....See MoreBen Boddy
