Lounge Problems

My wife and I are looking at a refurb but the lounge is the deal breaker. With a fireplace at one end and rectangular in shape (5.5m x 3.2m) and window at the fireplace end there could be a lot of wasted space behind the sofas if you position them towards the fireplace. Completely open to suggests, knocking down walls and repositioning the fireplace with a bio ethanol one so no chimney is required. Please solve our lounge conundrum. Thanks Ben!

Comments (47)Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. I like the idea of adding brass and will show her your ideas, she was looking at a coffee table very similar to the one you suggested! I think she'd like floral but not her man, so looking at keeping the decor 'male friendly' too :) The TV sadly cant go on the wall opposite the sofa because of where the door opens into the lounge. Maths Wife - Good idea with the room divider, I'll show her as I know she prefers to keep toys etc a little hidden. They are restricted with moving the sofa down any further unfortunately due to the placement of radiators. Thanks, bubbles bathrooms and tiles - I really like that artwork, thank you! Comments (8)The most obvious place for the sofa is where they have it. What size is your sofa? Which way would you like to face as in is there a view outside the french doors? I quite like how their tv is wall mounted. If it was on a bracket it could be pulled forward for watching. What about an L shaped sofa along the same wall as the previous owners with the ottoman end along the left hand wall? You could put the sofa at 90deg to the doors but there are access issues and the woodburner might not be as visible. Its an attractive woodburner I would want to see it. Sorry only read your second comment now. I would set up my 3 seater sofa with the armchair at the end as though it was L shaped. I wasn't going to mention the carpet......See More- 10 years ago
