what should I put on this gloss black sideboard

Vase, flowers, lamp, sculpture, clock etc. as its black I would avoid any dark wood ornaments.

A larger picture frame. A single tall candlestick in a metal to match the mirror frame ... +++. Brass rather than pewter though would brighten up the area more. Alternatively a lamp would brighten up the corner but to make it fit move the sideboard so that the mirror is off centre.

If you were feeling extravagant you could get a custom piece of stone made for the top. (Gloss black, polished stone and brass are a really classic combination.)

Route through your favourite glassware, pottery, porcelain etc. and find a few complimentary pieces and make a balanced arrangement with them.

As the ceilings are low you probably should recess the lights. As far as your lighting plan goes, simply imagine yourself in the rooms and mark spots where you will need light from above. Then look at each room and decide where, logically, you will want to turn lights on and off. And where you'll need dimmers (anywhere where you will be relaxing is a good way to look at this). Last but not least, have an idea of where your furniture will go so you can have sockets positioned in appropriate places for task lighting. Do ask your electrician's opinion too, they will have plenty of experience to draw on.

What are the maximum dimensions of the footstool? Also what's the height of the sofa to the seat cushion? Personally I'd go for a Chesterfield on legs to keep the feeling of space in a plain fabric with a tray on top as AJ suggested

Keep it very simple. A large piece of artwork or print over the sofa and a large simply framed Scandi style mirror over the sideboard. I would echo your neutral colours and stay away from anything ornate. An alternative might be to fix simple shelves above your sideboard to give you room to create and change small displays. I would use floating shelves in white or a pale wood to echo your floor. Choose a large piece of artwork hung in the landscape orientation on the wall closet to the sideboard.

Hi Reshma,

You could try placing a clusters of vases ( 1 tall vase and 2 shorter ones) in one corner of the sideboard. Place the photo frame at an angle in the other corner of the side board. And maybe have a decorative bowl in the centre. Alternatively you could have a lamp in one corner instead of the vases.

What are the other accent colours in that room ? You could place accessories of the same colour on the side board.
