HELP- plaster board walls

I have just moved into a new build property and have 18mm plasterboard internal walls with metal studs. Put up a coat rail/ hooks using metal plaster board raw plugs. Put a coat on and it pulled straight out leaving large holes. Also have a heavy mirror which I want to put up on an internal wall but in a quandary....there must be a way? Help please

Attaching things to plasterboard requires special fixings to keep the plaster from ripping or cracking.

The first thing to know about hanging anything on a plaster wall is that you can’t use ordinary wall plugs
Heavy duty plasterboard fixings

Heavy duty fixings are those that can take massive amounts of weight without harming the plasterboard. There are several brands to choose from, including Redidrivas and Grip It. The strongest of these fixings can support up to 180kg of weight. Most of these are installed in basically the same way.
plastic or nylon toggle

These fixings are brilliant in their simplicity. This fitting is surprisingly strong, though it shouldn’t be used for very heavy items. It will usually hold these, but they can cause the fixing to tilt, loosening the fixing’s hold. Instead, use these for shelf brackets, which both pull on the wall and push down on the fixing.

Hollow wall anchor

Like the toggles, hollow wall anchors aren’t ideal for very heavy items. They are very good for things that pull away from the wall, like shelves. Attach the top of the item to the wall with these fixings, and they will spread the pulling force out so that the plaster isn’t damaged.

There is also the spring toggle & light weight fixings which are good for hanging pictures etc.

Alternatively find the partition timber and hang from those. There are detectors you can get which scan the walls for timber, cable & wiring so that you are not attempting to screw or bang nails into the walls blindly!

Thank you for your comments. The article you posted was really interesting and pretty much sums up what is going on with the house. The downstairs floor are concrete and blackjacked as they have obviously taken up the flags, They are also uneven so will have to get taken up to level out. I'm hoping there isn't 10 inches of concrete but even so it's going to be difficult to take out. This has pushed water into the walls, so they then blackjacked the bottoms of those and this has pushed the water higher. If only any of this was present when I bought the house I won't have bought it. The builder they recommended that had done all the works was supposed to be a member of the Federation of Master Builders, but I remember looking him up when problems first started arising and he wasn't listed. We have started stripped all the plaster from the external wall and the room is starting to get drier already. The walls are no longer sweating. I'm trying to work out what is under the blackjack. It doesn't look like plaster and I'm wondering it they have put some sort of cement based render on the stonework. Either way it's all going to have to be done correctly now. Bye Bye Bank Account :-(

We recently did this on our renovation of a similar aged property, my dad was the builder so I’d trust that for us it was the best option and not a money making ploy. The old plaster was in an ok condition although I’m not sure how great it would have looked after the wall paper stripping. For us the pros and cons where: Pros: We could easily hide all the pipes and wiring inside the new walls. We could also put the plug sockets, light switches, internet ports, were ever we wanted them. We got a nice clean finish that’ll last and is inline with everything else that’s newly fitted. We could add insulation between the external walls and new plaster (we used Celotex which have has made a huge difference) We could shuffle the walls a little bit to make the bathroom and hallway bigger. Piece of mind, you might uncover something hidden under the old plaster that needs fixing. We found a dividing wall that wasn’t tied in and a crack that needed pinning. Getting it out the way while the House was a mess anyway. Cons: Cost, it wasn’t cheap. It took a while, it added around 4 weeks onto our project. It was hard work as we did all the finishing decorating ourselves. The new plaster will need to be mist coated and painted which is around 4-5coats of paint. You’ll need to have new skirting, picture rail and architrave fitted (and this also needs painting). The plaster will crack as it dries out over the first year, so you will need to touch it up. We did this ourselves and it took a weekend. We intend for the property to be our ‘forever’ home and were doing a complete renovation upstairs and downstairs anyway. So for us it was worth while. The first photo looks like its missing architrave which would cover the edge, you can see the skirting board ends short like it should but up against something (Usually architrave if its a door) Second looks like it could be water/moisture from the sink or window causing it to peel, check the window isn't failing, you should be able to tell if its damp coming out if you leave a piece of cling film (or any plastic) on it over a day and night, if theres condensation under it in the morning its damp coming out.
