Thanks everyone, some great ideas here. I think I'm going to go for a big modern lamp, although the idea of a Tiffany lamp has me thinking. Adding a bold bit of colour. I won't go for a table as I think I've got too much oak and furniture in the room. Had looked at a corner unit and there are some fantastic ones around. But again it's another piece of furniture. I'm not discounting the plant idea either but will decide in the next few days. It's just strange having two sofas instead of the corner unit. I'm going to start by taking down the curtains and getting lighter ones. Will post a picture when I've finished. Thanks for all your input, it's helped a great deal. X

Why not keep it simple to go with the table so something like this but maybe a simple scandi fern print or something rather than just the frame.cox and cox have a number of vases that would suit plus faux stems or try oka, Neptune or Abigail ahern for the stems but would keep them simple. I'd try and marry the other objects in some way ie colour, style, material, shape etc. I also have a chair on my landing and I have to say it does get used! Hopefully you have another spare corner.

Daisy, preferably walnut or wenge, whichever shade compliments the dark feet on our sofas the best. Not too fussed about 30mm or 40mm to be honest (we were quoted for 40mm). That is interesting what your hubby advised as we do have quartz already! I’d never heard of end grain worktops before colourhappy but see they are very hardwearing &, like you say, the join wouldn’t be noticeable. Prefer the look of a full stave worktop :)

Like I said, anything over 8mm is overkill. If you’ve had issues in the pay then the cabinets have not been fixed & installed well enough. Industry standard is 8mm for a reason. B&Q etc are cheaper because 1. They have the monopoly & 2. They come flat pack & 3. Theres Limited choice in colours & sizes. They also use cheaper materials Upgrading to MCF egged with other companies (such as DIY) is the what gives the extra quality. Note they are still 8mm backs.
