It feels like the room is lacking a focal point. A change of colour might indeed help but I think you first need to address the use of the space. Is the dining table used regularly? Is that a working fireplace in the 3rd picture? Is there a TV in the room?

I feel like there must be a better way to arrange the furniture but I can't quite get a sense of the room from the pictures. A rough floor plan showing doors, windows and so on would really help...

I think your room needs a picture rail around the top. With a greige (beige/grey) colour below and a lighter one above. And I think that you should paint the doors white.

The art is hung too high. Should be at eye level. The sitting area could do with a more elegant, or at least more interesting chandelier. The sofas could be closer together. If we can see more of the room, we can maybe think of a better way to place your furniture, make it more homely.

Hi it's a great space and I agree the windows are beautiful, no wonder you fell in love with this house. Often a new house takes a little time to get a new identity. If you've had a different style of home before it's hard to stop buying things that suit the old home, well at least I did when I move from a small house to a larger house. I kept buying small things which looked a bit lost in a bigger space.

You have a lovely high ceiling that will make the space feel airy and large but the lights are a wee bit too high. I'm going to tentatively say it, the drum pendant is perhaps the wrong light for such a large space and looks a bit out of place. The one over the table is a great light fitting and is exactly right look, we sell this light and it's a lovely fitting but could maybe be a touch closer to the table but the look is great and it adds a little something to the space.

If I could suggest one thing, I'd move the drum shade to another room perhaps a bedroom, when funds permit, invest in a light with a bit more presence. The one you have is nice and there's nothing wrong with it. I'm not being critical of the choice but with such a great high ceiling and lovely features it may be worth considering going large. As a rule of thumb don't hang your light lower than 7ft.from the floor When I look at how much empty space you have above the door you've possibly got 5ft, of void. Fill the void with a statement light.

Having high ceilings can cause some people a little head scratching as lots of off the shelf lights are about a meter high which sounds a lot till you put is in a large space with high ceilings.

Take a look at our sister company Bespoke Lights there's lots of lights you can have made with a longer drop. Which often works out cheaper and less of a faff than getting an electrician to extend it. sometimes they need rewire a light fitting and that becomes very expensive and a little problematic.

The above light has a warmth that may work really well with your neutral and earthy toned room, but there are lots of different styles if this isn't for you.

Jonathandb1972 read my mind re furniture layout. I would definitely make the dining corner into a library area! Since both of your sofas are corner units, you might need to to replace one with a 2 seater. I would also try to fit a console table behind the sofa that has its back to the table.

In regards to your colour scheme we would definitely suggest adding some more colour into your room to give the room some more character (pastel colours are really fashionable at the moment). You can do this through wall colour or simply adding more accessories to your room, although be aware not to cluster the room.

We usually base the room around the furniture (obviously we make sofas), by this we mean that the sofa is usually the main aspect of the room.

Struggling to find a good setup with the two sectionals in the layout with the dining table in the bay window. So I 'gave' you a larger corner sectional. Could also be two sofas or a sofa and two chairs. I'm not convinced it is the best use of space. The library nook may not be used that much and the flow towards the patio doors isn't ideal either. Still, may be worth a try if you like the idea.

The windows are fantastic and I would be inclined to situate dining in this area. You then have that dining space to perhaps have a reading area with one wingback and perhaps a shelving unit. A larger pendant light would suit the room too I feel and create more focus. Have you considered turning the sofa around to roughly where the rug is. You could situate a slim console behind it to create a divide between the dining area, if you chose to move the table..

I thought that if you were to paint the inside of the chimney breast black or a dark slate colour it would help to give it more depth.. So it looks and feels like a working fireplace, a swan basket on plain legs even with logs, can look fabulous if you don't actually use the fire..

In this way you bring the focus of the room to this area as well as the dining area. Having a reading area where current dining space is, leads the living space more naturally into this narrower space and makes it feel more open. If you could swap the hinges on that door that opens onto fireplace wall this would also benefit the fireplace, without moving the rad as it will be just fine. Then door opens onto rad wall..

A mirror over the fireplace would be a lovely addition to frame the fireplace and hung landscape I think would suit it very nicely. : ))
