Recessed lighting in plaster ceilings

My husband and his dad (electrician) have put recessed lighting into plaster ceilings before and while it was obviously much more work than drywall, he said it's do-able with the right tools to get through the plaster/lath. We are purchasing a 1940s Colonial where 3 of the upstairs bedrooms would need updating w/ recessed can lights in plaster ceilings. I recently read on here that it wasn't possible to put in such lighting in a plaster ceiling. From our experience we know it's possible but is it generally avoided given the fact that there is more work involved from creating the holes to patching to match etc.?

The spring clips are made for 5/8" drywall thickness, max. If you can pull some of the flooring above, you can fit new work cans. Or maybe a remodeling can is made for thicker ceilings, but I never ran across those.

Can lights are really out of place in an older home.

Why not just put in 3 or 4 bulb semi flush mount fixtures? And then provide additional light with floor or table lamps? It's not like most people typically use overhead lights in a bedroom much anyways except when cleaning or looking for lost car keys.

The work to award ratio, and chance for damage are really not in favor of this project.

I like that idea, I can install lights in the bay window ceiling. What I'm considering now, is, looking at my first lighting plan, having the L-shape row of 3 lights around the doors and an additional 1 in the bay window on one switch, but also having 2 above the bed on a separate switch, so you have a choice on where the light is falling depending on whether you're lying in bed or walking around getting ready, I'll end up with 4 lightswitches in the doorway and 3 either side of the bed then, as well as the closet switches lol, the whole room is basically hundreds of switches

I had spotlights added to my kitchen and dining room long after they were plastered. In the kitchen they cut a few circular holes and dragged wires from the center light (which I removed). In the dining room next to it they did the same but created a new wire to the switch. The end result was great and I just had to get a plasterer to fill in the few small holes that the electrician made. This was all done from below the ceiling - they did not use any access from above even though it was a two story house.

I’m not a big fan of downlights but they’re often a must for bathrooms/kitchens, you could combine with wall lights/pendants either side of a mirror. By recessed shelves, do you mean a niche for toiletries etc? If so, I’d say they are extremely handy and not dated

If you really want the look of recessed cans, consider some of the new slim LED fixtures, such as Philips SlimSurface LEDs. They look almost identical to cans, but require only a regular J-box. As a consequence, they are much easier to air seal, and require a smaller hole in the ceiling.
