Painting method for kitchen cabinets.

Hi. I am thinking of repainting my wooden kitchen cupboard doors. I have read a lot about hand painting methods either done professionally or diy. However I was wondering if anyone had ever had their cupboards spraypainted and what were their experiences of this method. Thanks in advance.

Spray paint them, company does this in house and takes removable parts away and brings them back.

Done nice and clean and tidy

Hi Jamie, we just had a builder around to look at the extension you tried to do and messed it up. The batch of tiles you put up where a green batch hadn't sat fir 6 months before use like tiles are supposed too. The wooden beams to tac tiles in where all different sizes. The side support beam was cut in the middle so you could raise side of roof, making the pitch of roof out. As I told you to re-do roof tiles as there was massive dips between velux window, you called it a valley that let's water escape. I said no replace and all you did was lifted up roof and put different sizes of wood under to make roof look flush. Trying to get you to finish snag list was a joke. You never over saw anything on the job, you even put a bathroom window in and it was 5mm out you cut through our work top using it as a tool table. Plaster in hallway Wall blew out, the window we wanted blocked up and toothed in wasn't it was left a eyesaw. Patio I've had to re-do myself. Everything that was done had mistakes all over it. If I could give a minus review I would. I'd just like to say and warn ppl not to use you. What a nightmare it was 12 week job took from June to December as most of the time the ppl working for you was no shows and turn up 2 times a week if we were lucky. Not one job.was funished and then moved on to the next one, loads going at once and mistakes made on everything you touched. I'd post photos of the work you tried to do but have to many to post. You even come around shouting at my mum for more payments after she said no not until one job is complete and you hit the point where it was stated you needed another payment. 69 year old women I my add aswell. You only ever turned up to ask for more money you never oversaw anything.

Hi, I have just finished repainting my kitchen myself. Overall I am happy with the new look, but I think the final verdict is only possible after some time (to see if the paint hardens enough). I have used Ammonite Farrow and Ball which is very warm grey colour. It looks nice in dark corners as well. Had to apply 4 coats of paint after 3 coats of FB primer. So be aware of the quantities. I must say that the process of repainting was not an easy ride. I spent overall three weeks (full time weekends and doing some smaller works in the evenings). Preparation is the hardest part (sanding, sanding and sanding), while painting is also a vey delicate process). If you are not afraid of hard work do it yourself! Otherwise, a professional is always a good option. Check traditionalpainter.com website they have a number of good instructions on repainting the cabinets.

Hi. I like your kitchen as it is however after 6 years maybe it is time for a change! Your idea of painting just the wall units would work, I'd keep them in the wall colour, not sure if you're changing that or not? I think the worktop is fine, it's reflecting light (and everything else!)! Another option is to keep the island in wood (also means avoiding painting wine rack). If you went for cup handles for example I think you could have 2 on each island drawer without leaving any holes. I'm not sure on the cooks blue with the black tops but the pitch blue may work although I don't expect it will alter the light situation. Have you also looked at little Greene paint? I rave over the quality and it wipes down very easily whereas I personally find f&b and dulux trade doesn't. In theory I would use satinwood on the beams although I have used emulsion on a couple of things that don't take any knocks to get a chalky feel and they're absolutely fine.

I personally would paint both sides of the door. Otherwise it will look odd when you open them. Zinnser 123 is an excellent primer. Nick Butler Newleaf Furniture

Hi Jay. Yes I think what you’ve listed should work. I’d use the Zinsser bullseye 123 primer 2 coats. No need to sand before painting because if they are melamine or plastic wrapped mdf then they don’t sand too well anyway, just a good scrub with sugar soap, wipe off and dry, and the Zinsser should stick. If you think they need sanding between coats then do so but normally I’d just give a quick sand with a fine grit paper after the 2nd coat of primer. Not used the Good home paint before so cannot comment on what it’s like. I imagine it’s quite a plasticky paint so it might be very gloopy (for want of a better word🙂). So with gloopy acrylic paints you need to be careful when sanding between layers as they don’t so much chip as peel, and can gunk up in fiddly corners. Try to spread the paint as thinly as possible and use a good quality acrylic paintbrush for brushing out where paint has gathered (usually the corners). Better to do thin layers than thick ones. Again I would probably only sand after the 2nd coat. Varnish is entirely up to you but I use it because I tend to use just ordinary emulsion on furniture etc. I use Wilko clear water based varnish, it’s thin but does the job. I can recommend getting tack cloths (I get mine from Halfords) to pick up any remaining dust after sanding and wiping. Fluffy rollers and acrylic brush for water based paints, and foam roller and natural brushes for oil based. Hope all goes well🙂, if in doubt experiment on a few pieces of scrap wood first so you see how the paint behaves and perfect your technique.
