UNDER THE STAIRS

we have a marble staircase and the dead space under it at the highest point is 8 ft with 4 ft depth. this is a frustrating dead space as it is adjacent to the living room. our first solution was to build 3 built in cabinets with glossy white finish, but that would cover up the gorgeous marble floor and would look "heavy" if that makes sense? so confused!!
(the plant was placed temporarily to liven up the adj space; we need to figure out first what to do with the nook then start decorating that wall :) )

yes, a concealed storage was something we thought about also.
in the interim we've decided to put a couple of fibreglass planters under there...we like it and the ZZ plants seem to like it too!☺

Comments (1)We had the same issue and we got a carpenter in to build us three drawers and a coat closet. We installed a rail so we can hang our coats and the three drawers strores our shoes. This means that everything is organisesd and we dont have any shoe or coat clutter in the entryway....See More

Hi there, I would agree with the above comment. The plants sit well but if you do decide to fit any storage etc I would make them floating storage space so your beautiful floor can still be seen and this will also draw the eye into the space further. Perhaps you could put a floating desk in with some cool lighting and make it into a internet snug or a cosy reading corner. Here's a picture of a hall cupboard I converted for a Client in Edinburgh which also added value to the property by creating a new room.
This is a more quirky industrial style than the sleek design of your hallway but demonstrates what can be done with a small space and how effective clever lighting can be too. We put 'hello' letter lighting in this space but a simple phrase such as 'boo' might add a sense of fun under your stair.

The stairs leads up to another flight which then opens onto an open area, then two flights of stairs again to the 2nd floor. painting that wall would be jarring, i guess?
the whole house is very airy( bright light through a skylight), minimalistic and in various shades of white. (we' ve been very slow/careful to add any furniture as how much is too much or how little is too little??).
we've pretty much nixed the idea of concealed storage, it WOULD be a shame to cover up the marble floors! :)
