I don't think so. They may appear more trendy these days as so many people have them. I had one back when my children were small and that was over 20-25 years ago, so they've been around forever.
Fine in casual rooms - but if it's your only seating area - not sure if I'd want to be snuggled up quite so close to a virtual stranger who's come to chat to you about insurance or something ! Also - often a designers nightmare to squeeze in an existing non changeable handed one !!
If they were outdated furniture retailers wouldn't sell them. There are loads for sale. I have one in my other home in Somerset and my son has just ordered one to be made in grey in the same design. While he was ordering his 3 more people ordered the same one. They are very popular.
