Help with this dining set!

I will shortly be inheriting this dining table and chairs. I know that it's expensive and beautiful wood - but it's too formal, and not really to my taste! I prefer a more rustic or contemporary feel. I think it's the chairs more than the table that I have an issue with, and I don't think reupholstering will have much of an impact. Any suggestions as to what I could do here...would it be a complete crime to sand and paint them?

I would sell it to someone who loves it, then buy one you really love too

If you don't like them then you don't like them. I suspect it's the design of the chairs that don't appeal to you so sanding them and repainting them won't change that.

Sell them and buy a set you like.

I have something closer to the Wycome set - although fabric (washable) padded seats and a bench. However I love the luxurious look of the Maddox chairs. I think probably the Wycombe is more functional on a regular use kind of table, however the Maddox would be great for dinner parties where you might spend an entire evening at the dining table!

It's a lovely room. Are you buying new furniture or trying to make your existing furniture work because an L shaped sofa might work well in the space and allow for two separate zones. Also, how many people do you need seating for? Can you get away with a small dining table for every day that extends for visitors?

Although some great vintage pieces can be sanded and repainted to really fine new life that you can enjoy.. I think it's probably the shape and style that you don't like rather than finish or colour.. there also doesn't seem to be much wrong with it which would mean it necessarily needs to be 'changed' ..so I agree with Jen P, the best thing you can do is sell to someone who can enjoy them for what they are and buy something more useful to you in memory of your inheritance :) something just aren't meant to be.
