Wallpapering around ceiling beams. Help!?

I've stupidly decided that I wanted to wallpaper either side of our stone chimney breast. We have ceiling beams every foot or so . . . And hot water pipes. I've made a start but it's been fiddly, this is my first time wallpapering and I was just wondering if anyone had tricks or tips to make papering around the actual beam a little easier. Also, I've tried several different Stanley knives and I'm changing the blade regularly but the paper seems to be tearing in places. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Comments (26)Hi. I hope you don't mind me saying but the stage area may be outgrown quite quickly unless you put in a big stage but I'm not sure there's the room. If you do go for a stage, I'd put it in the top left corner as you come through the door with the bed in the right corner with the pink style canopy (which should just fit?). Personally I love the canopy pictured against the wall (you can also tuck drapes out of harms way) and it will grow with your daughter. Your daughter certainly knows her own mind btw! The striped wallpaper would be good on that back bed wall with a canopy. You could mix striped wallpaper with patterned on the other walls if she wants that ie the stars? I would probably try and keep it a little simple though with the feature wall and duck egg on others if you want the room to last. I love the pink and green lights in your pic, maybe someing similar with pink and duck egg? . Comments (1)Hi Lindsey, How about a geometric style wallpaper? I'd suggest keeping the dado rail, wall below and skirting the same colour, and having the wallpaper above as you propose. A geometric design is contemporary and will add energy and life to the space. I'd suggest one of the following: Zoffany Spark paper GP & J Baker Langdale Trellis paper Farrow & Ball Tessella paper For the paint colour, Farrow & Ball have a great selection: Farrow & Ball paint colours I wouldn't have too much of a contrast between the paint and wallpaper colours, as the difference between a flat paint colour and geometric design should be enough of an impact. 7 years agoWell, it's slightly rough and ready but that's the first (and widest) side of the fireplace done. It's not perfect and it's taken me a while but I'm fairly happy with the results. The pattern doesn't match perfectly (due to wonky/bumpy walls) but luckily, with the nature of the pattern, you can't tell unless you're nose distance away from the wall. Thought I'd upload my progress, will do the same when I've finished the other side.
Was also wanting to ask about painting the pipes. Oil based under coat and oil based paint on top? Should I do two 2 coats of undercoat? Surely it will peel off or will it last long enough to not have to touch it up every 6 months?
