I assume the roof is pitched (opposed to flat). In which case Velux are really a very cost-effective solution. You can be fairly imaginative with the internal finishing to differentiate it looking bog-standard. For example, introducing various angles away from the rooflight. However, as an alternative, you may wish to consider one of numerous products from Glazing Vision. The Ridgeglaze Sized Rooflight would introduce a fantastic amount of natural light and a a view of the sky above but will rely on a hipped roof. Alternatively a Pitchglaze Fixed Roof Light will again flood the space with natural light within a standard pitched roof, and can be up to 3m2 in size.

I find it quite easy from my phone ie take a snap of the layout from your phone and then when you add a comment on this thread, it gives you the option to add a photo - which is takes from your library. Just click on the pictures you want to upload (you have to do each one at a time I think) then you should see them pop up on your post.

Thanks Jonathan for your reply. What he had originally drawn was a 1m wide window. Because we were concern about having a too big window in a W/C we asked him to reduce the size to 60cm but we don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. I think if it was going to be an office it makes total sense having a bigger window but we can’t justify having a big window for a downstairs toilet. We were also considering putting a privacy glass on that window but not sure how it will look like. We also thought of having the window on the side and not on the front elevation. We live in a corner plot and there’s a lot of space on the side of our property but again, don’t know if it will look wrong not having a window on the front. Hard to get everything right I suppose. ♀️

Hi Jane! You said you have little ones so want to avoid climbing opportunities for now. That makes sense but it's also worth thinking about in a year or so when you might want to start involving them in cooking, baking cakes etc, and then you could find it really helpful to be able to sit them up so they can also "work" along with you. If you're on the other side of a peninsula or island to them then you can keep sharp stuff away from them and help them with mixing, weighing, etc... Always worth looking towards the next stages when you're designing with kids because they'll grow and it can take a bit of time to finish a project - they likely will have changed in many tiny and maybe big ways before it's all complete.
