bright and wrong??

The glass splashback was fitted at one of our projects yesterday. To our surprise it's brilliant yellow, 'sunshine' to be exact. It was supposed to be 'linen', a much more subdued, calming colour. And after a little investigation its seems that our mischievous creative director told our procurement manager the colour a joke - ha ha indeed.

So, what do we do? Does this look incredible or incredibly bad?

It doesn't work as it is because there is nothing else yellow for it to relate to. Yes, you could accessorise and add yellow throughout the room (and probably the rest of the house) - but that only works if the owners actually love mustard yellow and are willing to have it as their main colour pop. But if you have the chance to change it I would - it's too warm/dirty a colour to go with the cold/clean blue/gray marble and the blue/gray cabinets (sometimes a mix of warm/cold or dirty/clean does work, but only in a very well designed space imho where it is deliberate and has been thought through properly). I also don't like the marble with the floor tiles - too much going on for me personally - the backsplash needs to be very boring (and blue-white to tie in with the marble) to allow the marble and the floor tile to shine.

It is definitely down to personal taste of the owner. I personally don't like it, but I am sure someone will!

I like the colour but in my opinion it doesn't go in this kitchen. I also don't think linen sounds right with your grey and pale blue theme- I would imagine a grey mirror or white glass would be a safer bet.

1. Swap the window seats for s low upholstered bench. 2. Add a side table between the door and sofa, with a table lamp. 3. Hang something beautiful over the fireplace. A painting or mirror, and other smaller paintings behind the sofa. 4. Replace the two tall dark pieces of furniture with mid-height pieces to balance the tall chimney breast. These should have table lamps or wall lights above. 5. If it still needs more, add a low coffee table in the middle and low stools.

If deep grey really appeals to you then go for it! The beauty of paint is that you can always change your mind, it may be a bit time consuming but it's relatively inexpensive (compared to picking the wrong sofa or kitchen cabinets :0) I have a Pinterest board called 'The dark side' with hundreds of images of interiors that I find incredibly attractive (think Abigail Ahern) but some people would probably think were blacker than the inside of a camel and avoid like the plague :D I currently live in a small Georgian terrace with low ceilings and little natural light so most of them aren't an option (unless you really don't mind bumping into things) but I have painted two walls in my bedroom (which is much larger/higher for some reason) in a deep steel grey and I love it, I only wish I hadn't lost courage and painted the other two in a pale white/grey. Hi Laurence, have you considered using recessed lighting uplights to shine up the wall. The reflected light will illuminate the whole room. I would suggest using high power LED Strip like our Samsung Strip, it is 1000 Lumens per Metre and draws just 8.2w of power. If you need it even brighter we have the 2000/m Lumen version. The effect uplighting will create will be less industrial looking than Corn Lamps. It brightens the Space a lot. I like it. If your clement is not expecting this it could be a shock. But they might like it.

I cant decide whether I like it or not! Here's my reasoning:

I like the addition off a bold colour in a otherwise monochrome kitchen and really uplifts the mood, with the splashback being a vibrant yellow.

I'm unsure whether that particular shade of yellow works well with the hue of the units and the worktop. if the units were white, or a more colder grey, maybe the scheme would have worked better.

It's too bright against the pastel units for me. It might work if you added some of the darker grey from the floor as appliances / accessories at worktop level.

Out of curiosity how do you open the two base units without a handle groove in the under sink section? Also what was the rational of having unnecessary traditional drainer grooves in an otherwise modern kitchen?

Hello Cato creative ltd,

Whilst its not my kind of kitchen, I do think you can work with this... The reason you feel it is out of "sink" yes I like a bit of wit in the morning.. Is because its the brightest colour in the room... I like the two colours together too and so I would not change this but work with it!

Ways to do this would be "beautiful" accessories... or perhaps change a floor tile or two to the colour of the splash back.... Window blinds, another wall in the room to match... other smaller things like dinner sets or some other visible elements.. Vases or a beautiful fruit bowl as some examples. (Its not an earthy natural kitchen so my choices are based on the materials you currently have and the style of the kitchen) A lot of people refer to this idea as "pops" of colour - a term I don't like at all, but you can very easily make this choice a deliberate one rather than an afterthought, you just need to carry on a little bit but choose wisely.... One more thing... Add a bit more marble as this is a nice contrast to the other materials. I also prefer an upstand to complete a worktop. If you had offcuts etc, these make good chopping boards, serving plates etc... If one thing had to change for me it would be the flooring.. I would have chosen a mustard terrazzo. :))

This one is a little close up with a few additions... You'll notice there's a bit of green which would also suit... It doesn't have to be Murano glass but you see how you can add interest, the stripy vase has both the grey and the mustard if you look and makes for something unexpected to add to the focal point.

I like it. The one thing i really dislike is the worktop. Should have been plain grey with the units and floor. Am i the only one that thinks Marble has had it's day?

One thing you haven't said it what colour the units are? People are presuming they are grey - some saying pale blue?

However if they units are white with a grey/white marble top then the colour would look amazing with them.
If tinted units and worktop - then no, I dont think it would work.

It's horrid. Would have been much nicer if it was a soft turquoise. I love marble - it is a classic that has been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years and will never date. I don't like mustard yellow in any shape or form.

On my screen the units read a pastel blue but they could well be grey. The yellow... mmmm...while I'm all for bold colours I think this just looks like someone fried an egg and popped it on the wall! A more subtle colour would look better.

Personally I don't like the combination of the glass with the marble. I would add texture back in with accessories. I've only had a quick look but an earthenware bowls/s (maybe with some figs would look great against the mustard!) and a vase with a couple of stems in. I might then repeat the mustard elsewhere

Hi there! I like it and it is not "incredibly bad"
or "horrid". If your client is not happy at all the splash back can
be replaced. The walls can be painted grey of funky wall paper can make this
kitchen look very interesting and bright.
