We're in the process of adding a floor to ceiling stud wall in our bedroom to section off new wardrobes and create a dressing space behind the wall (lighting here will be top mounted on wardrobes). Front-side we will wallpaper that wall and our bed will sit against it with wall-mounted bedside lights, bedside shelves and double sockets, all perfectly symmetrical. The difficulty we're having is how to approach the ceiling lighting. We're in a 1900-1910 terraced house in North London - the big, South-facing room with bay and side windows has (no doubt old) patterned wallpaper across the ceiling bordered by cornice with a plaster rose and single pendant light in the dead centre. With the addition of the stud wall, the rose now sits near one end of it and likely needs relocating to be centred to the stud wall and moved forward to middle point between stud wall and bay window. Moving the rose will likely mean the wallpaper underneath (if there is any) will be damaged/destroyed. Ideally we don't want to have to go to the trouble of taking all of the wallpaper off the whole ceiling and perhaps revealing issues that may mean replastering the lot. We're trying to think of what to do to avoid the potentially large job for a such a small thing! Any advice or thoughts? E.g. could we mask the rose in some way perhaps by way of a slightly lowered ceiling above all or part of the bed with down lighters. We do have access to the upstairs room if need be, albeit we'd have to lift carpet. Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi Lindsey, How about a geometric style wallpaper? I'd suggest keeping the dado rail, wall below and skirting the same colour, and having the wallpaper above as you propose. A geometric design is contemporary and will add energy and life to the space. I'd suggest one of the following: Zoffany Spark paper GP & J Baker Langdale Trellis paper Farrow & Ball Tessella paper For the paint colour, Farrow & Ball have a great selection: Farrow & Ball paint colours I wouldn't have too much of a contrast between the paint and wallpaper colours, as the difference between a flat paint colour and geometric design should be enough of an impact. I would suggest going with either of the two main colours in the wallpaper - a third toning or contrasting colour would detract from the paper. Which one is best depends on what's happening in the rest of the room, but either will work. It's not wise to try and match colours from a computer screen, as they are not true, so the best bet is to take a sample to one of the DIY stores that have paint mixing services. Don't ask them to match the colour - in my experience this rarely works - but use the paint swatches against your sample to find a match. Take your time, and if you're unsure, go for the slightly lighter colour. I'd also take the nearest swatches outside and check them in daylight. Do get sample pots of paint when you've pinned one or two options down, as the swatches are printed not painted. Paint an A4 [or larger] piece of paper and stick both paper and paint next to each other on your walls. A faff I know, but the best way to ensure you don't make expensive mistakes. Otherwise find a local designer who will come and do a paint match for you - they would charge for the service but you know you'll be getting the right one!

Hi P108 P What we know is that she is a teenager, and doesn't like pinks, but she likes greens and blues. Consider painting ceiling and walls in different colour than white - consult with her.
