Alan, great advice above! I'll just add that removing a radiator is a relatively easy job for a plumber - you can even DIY it, just google for instructions. If you decide to keep it and add units under the stairs, then you could either get a mask for the radiator and some narrow shelving above, or get a slightly larger shelf on top of it and use it as an impromptu laptop desk or a breakfast bar (last pic). Or, if you have any significant change left, buy one of those new designer radiators - works great on the wow factor. Personally I think the parquet would look fantastic sanded back and stained a dark walnut. As for added character the best ways to do this tend to be through using trim/picture rail/wainscoting, antique hardware for the door knobs and finally going for stylish lighting. Beveled glass lanterns always look lovely in hallways. A large antique mirror would be a nice addition too. If it helps I bought a fixer upper just over a year ago which was absolutely full of the previous owners/hoarders stuff and nothing had been maintained or updated at all. Similar to you there was little money in the kitty after buying so we're working our way through it too. I've actually found the slow approach to be good. It gives you time to research each room/style/project as you go. Plus living in the property helps in terms of working out what changes you really want to make, especially things like which way a door should open or not having a plug socket where you most want it. Ettel you wouldn't have to change the off white walls if you went for whitewashed/limed pale wood or used a white oil or wax on it Scandi style. I haven't seen it done but I was thinking of kitchens and floors in this kind of wood that I have noticed on Houzz. I also thought of the slightly rougher wood cladding used externally on buildings that you may be able to get from a wholesaler in a smaller quantity. This could give you a nice kind of rustic effect but then it would be up to you if you wanted to follow that into full country style or go with a more modern rustic aesthetic. I have seen nice things from habitat that would work with that. Just a more minimal look than country. Sorry, I've never attached a photo on houzz.
