Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Underfloor heating

We want to install Warmup underfloor heating in kitchen and bathrooms but don't want to dig up the floors or have a significant step up into the rooms.

What's the best way to achieve this or is it even possible? Are there extra thin floor coverings we should look at?

It's not thick. We have it in both our bathrooms. It's just matting and then the floor tiles over it. Makes such a difference to stand on in the winter.

Hi Bry,

The WarmUp sticky mats are just 3mm thick, this should mean that the raise in floor level is minimal because the 3mm is effectively absorbed into the tile adhesive when laying tiles over the floor.

We installed tile in our entryway, bath and laundry, but did not put in heating. Regret it ever since. I think that since tile isn't easily replaced it is worth the extra expense and an added feature for resale. I was under the impression that it only takes a few minutes to warm up, but that would probably depend on the brand.

Depends whether you want efficient or always warm underfoot? Efficiency of UFH affected by insulation. How airtight is the house? Do you have mechanical ventilation etc?

I’m no expert but I think removing the tiles will probably destroy the underfloor heating below. So you need to remove it all and start again, so new underfloor heating and the new floor. Of course you don’t have to have UFH with the new floor. Laying wood floor over the old could be problematic with the kitchen, doors etc as floor will be higher. Would the UFH even work efficiently if you lay new floor over old?

Hi, we are looking at buying a townhouse that has ceramic type tiling throughout the middle floor which has hot water underfloor heating. would like to replace this with wooden flooring, is it possible to remove tiles without damaging the heating system and get it smooth enough again for wooden flooring? or even would laying it ontop work or would the heat not transfer well up through the many layers? thanks in advance.
