Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Advice on layout for new master bedroom, en-suite and dressing area

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on Houzz, so I hope I have included enough information.

We are planning a wider extension project and are currently considering the internal layout of a proposed master bedroom suite. I have attached the current plan, together with the main dimensions.

The overall footprint and the rear glazing facing the shared balcony are fixed. However, the positions of the windows to the front can still be reconsidered, and a window could potentially be introduced into the side wall if that would help create a better layout.

The internal walls and door positions shown are only an initial suggestion. I am particularly conscious that the current entrance arrangement creates a slightly awkward dog-leg route into the bedroom, so I would be interested in ideas for improving the approach and general flow through the space.

The bed position shown is also indicative. We are currently expecting to rotate it by 90 degrees so that it faces towards the balcony and rear glazing.

Our main priorities are:

An en-suite with a large bath, a generous walk-in shower and two hand basins.
Sensible bathroom storage.
Ideally, separate his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes.
Alternatively, a shared walk-in wardrobe or dressing room with enough space to use comfortably.
A well-proportioned bedroom that does not feel compromised by the bathroom and wardrobe areas.

I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best arrangement of the bedroom, bathroom and dressing space, particularly how the entrance route could be improved and whether the room is realistically large enough to accommodate two separate walk-in wardrobes.

We are open to moving the internal walls and doors, so any layout suggestions or rough sketches would be very helpful.

I think this would tick a lot of the boxes. The 'headboard' wall should only be shallow storage with no handles - not everyday use but perfect for handbags, out if seasons, keepsakes, even a locked jewellery safe. A generous ensuite deserves a separate lok with its own window.

Jonathan, I really like your idea. I think you are right about the structural wall. But the wall behind the little toilet is a stud wall! The east window in the hall allows in natural light so I think I should keep it. Building on your idea, how about this version? In this scenario, we re-instate the south facing bedroom door so that there is one less door on the east side. As per Jonathan's idea, we create a shower room from the bedroom in the north-east corner. Does it flow? Dear Houzzers, please share your wisdom . :) Where is the best place for the shower room door: where it is now or in the little corridor? Will you feel claustrophobic in the corridor because it is just over 90cm wide and has walls on both sides? What is the ideal side of that shower room? If take out 1.5m from the bedroom, I get a 2.5 x 2.5m square bedroom/study and a 2.3 x 1.5m shower room. Will these sizes work for shower room and study/bedroom? Thanks a million.

Hi quick sketch attached which hopefully will get you thinking on non standard options to avail of the triple aspect and views. The bed is centred on the West facing window, so even though there isn't symmetry in the rest of the room, balance is created, focused on the bed. I've shown a freestanding headboard behind the bed - something along these lines....there are design options available which means no need for a bedside locker to the side. I've stolen a small amount of space from the adjacent bedroom (sorry kids!) & pushed the entrance door back into the hall slightly. There is no door to ensuite, but the curved wall which becomes part of the shower creates an entrance & cuts of what you don't want to see (the wc) but allows light in, views out to and from the North. This curve also creates a natural line to change floor covering - say from carpet to tile. Theres approx 5m of wardrobe tucked under the eaves with curved ends (if budget will allow!) and also His & Hers drawer sets either side of entrance door.

I agree bring the wall forward into the bedroom. You don’t even have to take the existing wall down. Retain it as a divider between his and hers, though I would remove the door. A pocket door in the new wall into the dressing room would be better rather than having to shut the door behind you every time you need to get access your clothes. You might also squeeze a shallow full height cupboard in the shower room along the wall beside the toilet to store all your toiletries etc.

Thank you that's a good point...never had a dressing room before so it's going to be luxury! We had another go at keeping main room the same, placing wardrobes either side of walkway to ensuite in the dressing room. Any thoughts on this layout? There might be room for a dressing table next to one wardrobe, hoepfully with a chair as would like one in there! Be nice to include some sort of seat/storage under the window but probably too tight with this layout? Unless we make ensuite a bit smaller. If we did go for this any ideas on storage in main room? Could do some here as plenty of space...maybe under the window? Or the wall one side of the entrance door is appx 400ml further back than wall the other side...could we build storage into this niche?

Hello Jamie, from a fitted-furniture point of view, I would resolve the entrance route and dressing area before fixing the bathroom walls. At the moment, the angled approach into the bedroom risks creating circulation space that cannot be used effectively for wardrobes.

I would consider creating a straighter entrance into a shared dressing room, with the bedroom reached through it. Full-height wardrobes could then run along both sides, giving each person a clearly defined section without using as much space as two completely separate walk-in wardrobes.

For comfortable use, I would normally allow approximately 600 mm for wardrobe depth and sufficient clear space between opposing runs for doors, drawers and two people to move around. Internal drawers also need to open fully without conflicting with the entrance or bathroom door.

A wider opening or pocket door between the dressing area and bedroom could improve the flow and avoid a conventional door taking up valuable wardrobe space. The cabinetry could also be used to create a more deliberate transition into the bedroom rather than leaving an awkward angled corridor.

Before deciding whether two separate walk-in wardrobes are realistic, I would compare their usable hanging and drawer capacity with one well-planned shared dressing room. Separate rooms often require more circulation space and can provide less actual storage than expected.

The exact recommendation would depend on the dimensions shown on the plan, particularly the width available between the bathroom and external walls.
