We removed 6 recessed spots from our breakfast room ceiling and replaced them with one central pendant light and it was the best thing ever! The lighting was always harsh even with trying all sorts of different bulbs and a dimmer but now it's transformed. We put off doing it for years as we thought it would be a major job and require re-plastering the ceiling but it was all done in less than 2 days. Our electrician did the wiring changes which didn't take him long and then the decorator patched the holes left by the recessed spots and used filler to blend them in. A coat of paint to the entire ceiling and you cannot see at all where the old lights were.

Hello Stella, Okay.. Well I would say that you could have pendants given the size of the room and if you're not having overhead extraction on the island for example... Also there are many other things you can do with an island that doesn't necessarily involve lighting at all.. You might want to hang your pans for example.. It's not a prerequisite to have lighting here. Interested to know what the Tropical garden window splashback is.. but don't forget a pendant can be a cluster configuration of a single drop. They look really gr8 at differing heights and 3 or 5 could be fantastic. In this way you can actually create something bespoke.. Things to consider are that beautiful bulbs that can be a feature in themselves... Scale... Large expansive, vs smaller. Then textures as this can create interest... Also colour... can you pick out the splashback somehow.. You can do this kind of thing with 1 ceiling rose and multiple outlets.. Have interesting cable and hooks... For other ways to illuminate which I can shed some light on... : ) ) no pun intended are wall lighting.. consider something more interesting than a spot or the usual suspects.. : ))

How about a compromise between the two options? Instead of 3 individual pendant lights which I think might look a bit cluttered being so close together you could have a single multi-light pendant. This would visually register as a single fixture but gives the light and look of multiple pendants? I've quickly scouted a few different style options at different price points but there's loads of similar ones to choose from.
