Pendant lighting - do I really need 3

Help - I'm about to embark on a new kitchen extension and am having a small peninsula island. The style is shaker and my house is Victorian end of terrace . Id love some pendants over it but can I squeeze in 3 or will it look to squashed and be better just to have single pendant. I'm planning on chopping veg and drinking cocktails at the island - any advice greatly appreciated as lighting is the 1 thing I'm struggling with . The rest of the lights will be recessed spots in traditional grid formation

8 years agoWe have an island in a Victorian terrace which is reached about 1m in length into the room. I have just put up three pendant lights of a similar size with recessed lights in the other part of the kitchen and I think it looks great. Gives a lot of light which is good as the island has become the main doing area in the kitchen. It defines the area and adds something at another height. My partner was really sceptical but has admitted I am not totally crazy.

Comments (12)Hi Moggles i have a similar renovation starting and have the same thoughts re pendant lighting from steel. Are you actually allowed to have anything coming from the steel itself or won't this negate the fire proofing measures put in place ? So if you are allowed to hang directly from under the steel the next concern is the head height as looking at your photos it does look limited. I have actually bought 2 pendant fittings so i can decide when the time is right which is going to look best. One is a standard pendant with 3 lights dropping from it ... quite ordinary. The other is a long thin led bar that i thought could be hung with as much or little drop from the ceiling as required. Comments (3)Thank you so much for your comments - I did try to attach a photo and twice it showed as attached but fails to have loaded. Anyway I agree - I love 3 more than 2 - it feels the right number to me. Whilst 2 decent sized ones would be fine too, I think the breakfast bar might look bigger with 3, plus we are having 3 seats under so I think 3 is what I'll go with. I hadn't thought about the size of the shades, so thank you for the advice of sticking to 25cm or less....See MoreJane F

8 years agoHow about a compromise between the two options? Instead of 3 individual pendant lights which I think might look a bit cluttered being so close together you could have a single multi-light pendant. This would visually register as a single fixture but gives the light and look of multiple pendants?
I've quickly scouted a few different style options at different price points but there's loads of similar ones to choose from.
