Thank you so much for your comments - I did try to attach a photo and twice it showed as attached but fails to have loaded. Anyway I agree - I love 3 more than 2 - it feels the right number to me. Whilst 2 decent sized ones would be fine too, I think the breakfast bar might look bigger with 3, plus we are having 3 seats under so I think 3 is what I'll go with. I hadn't thought about the size of the shades, so thank you for the advice of sticking to 25cm or less.

I don't think it will be too busy, but it will be personal preference. Different people notice different things. Why not have them put in and then if he finds them too distracting then have them removed? He'll probably forget they're there after a week!
