How many pendant lights on a 1.8m breakfast bar?

Hi, We have just knocked kitchen through to dining room and where the wall used to be we would like to put a 1.8mx1m breakfast bar (which will run perpendicular to the existing worktop housing a sink). The new breakfast bar will have a 60cm hob on the end by the walkthrough to the dining room (I know not ideal but we struggled to find somewhere else for it).

Originally we were going to have a 60cm extractor fan hanging down from the ceiling over the hob but in fear of people hitting their heads (as it would be right next to the walkthrough) we feel a ceiling flush extractor fan would be better. I had the electrician wire in for 2 pendant lights to the right of the extractor fan but now we are going with a flush ceiling one, do you think 3 would be ok and not too crowded (they would be set back from the ceiling flush extractor)??

I'm really keen to have 3 separate hanging ones and not really a fan of the single bar ones with 3 lights coming off.

Any advice would be fantastic. Photo is rather grainy but this is looking from the dining room into the kitchen and you can see where the breakfast bar is going to go by the unit that is just jetting out a bit on the left. The extractor would be in f

ront of the steel and the lights set the other side of the steel.

It all depends on the actual size of the pendant, ie the diameter, id say anything up to about 25cm dia you could go with 3, much over that and I’d be saying 2! I had 3no 25cm dia hanging very nicely spaced over a table of approx the same dimensions as your island, I now have two larger lights over a similar table, all lights are separately hung as well.

Hi, no photo seems to be attached.

As above, dimensions of the shade would determine how many but I am always a fan of odd numbers when grouping objects or lights so if you can fit 3 it is better visually than 2.

We removed 6 recessed spots from our breakfast room ceiling and replaced them with one central pendant light and it was the best thing ever! The lighting was always harsh even with trying all sorts of different bulbs and a dimmer but now it's transformed. We put off doing it for years as we thought it would be a major job and require re-plastering the ceiling but it was all done in less than 2 days. Our electrician did the wiring changes which didn't take him long and then the decorator patched the holes left by the recessed spots and used filler to blend them in. A coat of paint to the entire ceiling and you cannot see at all where the old lights were.

Hi. There are a couple of factors to consider such as how deep your peninsula is and the ceiling height available. If you have a double depth peninsula (e.g. 1200-1300d) then the fitting can sit a little lower over the worktop area without risk of hitting your head on it, I would then position the pendant approx 700mm from worktop height to underside of pendant. If however you have a narrower worktop, I would raise the fitting by 200mm to 900mm from top of worktop. Ceiling height, the typical ceiling height in the UK is 2.4m (but if you live in a town house you could have ceilings of 4m or a beamed cottage, scraping 2m if lucky) base on the above information you will have approx 800mm between underside of pendant and ceiling (based on the wider peninsula dims). I would look for a fitting approx 400-500dia and 200-250mm high. this allows for 550-600mm gap between top of fitting and ceiling. Edited: Just seen your post above that your ceiling is 9ft (2.74m) therefore you could look for a fitting that is even upto 400mm high and will still read well within the space If you would like any help sourcing a fitting meeting these dimension, please contact me directly. Instead of a bar or tension wire, perhaps a glazier could supply a section of toughened glass which could be used to suspend pendant lights without blocking natural light. Other options included a light recess around the reveal with powerful LED tape, or surface mounted fittings.

Awww thanks Ellie, I was gutted for you to read about your flooring issues! Yea, the guys have really kept things moving forward. Downstairs Should be painted over the next week, then flooring goes down 18-20th..then they can fit the pocket doors into the frames, then they need to be painted! Then we can get all our furniture back! But next exam is the 3rd :-0 so Proper unpacking will be mostly after that! Need to order new wardrobes and a new bed! Can’t believe how much has happened! In the last few months! Back wall - plan is to get a wooden shelf (probably an upcycled scaffolding board one) for all my many recipe books, which will add some life and colour! And a magnetic strip for some knives :-)

Thank you so much for your comments - I did try to attach a photo and twice it showed as attached but fails to have loaded. Anyway I agree - I love 3 more than 2 - it feels the right number to me. Whilst 2 decent sized ones would be fine too, I think the breakfast bar might look bigger with 3, plus we are having 3 seats under so I think 3 is what I'll go with. I hadn't thought about the size of the shades, so thank you for the advice of sticking to 25cm or less.
