Garden help needed!

I need som inspiration for my garden. After reading so much great advice houzz I’m hoping someone could help me :). I would like to leave alot of grass as we have a dog and so raised beds are a must! We will be having Indian sandstone from where there is currently decking all the way to where there is slabbing (decking and slabbing are coming up) Thank you in advance..

It's a great plot size and a lovely sunny position. The mediterranean look is all about stonework, planters & Pots. Have a two tier patio. The bottom layer straight across with a circular fronted second, higher level back left. On the top layer you could have your lounging area and water feature in the background. Coming forward a nice dining area for the late evening sun. Improving the fences is a must, the trellis to the left offers no privacy. The fence at the back may be salvageable. Replacing both would be better. You can also paint the fences to add colour in a pale blue maybe or white. White especially will show up terracotta wall hung planters and pots, whilst giving the plants and flowers something to 'pop' from.

I’m afraid to say it but I think your conifer is done for. Could be a number of things that caused it so I think more investigation is needed. I’m no expert (always learning gardener) but it could be a pest that’s caused it, judging by the black sooty mould on the eunonymous I think confirms this although they could all be separate incidents. The pest that attacked the conifer might have laid eggs elsewhere and the honeydew left by the aphids attracts the spores that produce the sooty mould. Washing the mould off the eunonymous is fairly easy with Luke warm water and a cloth and a little need oil should help, just be aware that the mould could return. As said it looks like it has new growth so try the wash first then remove affected leaves or prune if necessary. Having said this I could be utterly wrong and the problem is in the soil. Either a disease, honey fungus maybe? or just adverse soil conditions, weather conditions? Who knows. Have you tried the gardeners world forum? I think I’d advise against decking too, at least in the area close to the house as it would need to below the level of the damp course which would involve taking up the paving and a lot of ground works anyway. Decking needs to be raised so there’s no contact with ground but by doing so can create other problems such as make a great nesting site for rats and other rodents, not to mention slipperyness and more maintenance. Not saying it can’t be done and being a party pooper🙂, you could have steel frame and composite decking, just think it will be more work than you’re envisioning. With regards drainage and moss I’m guessing its north facing and doesn’t get much sun? Does water pool or puddle on the paving? Perhaps a drainage channel (see example pic) next to house may work more effectively but in a small area I don’t think it‘d be necessary. Certainly check the gutters for moss but i wouldn’t worry too much about the roof unless it’s really bad. On our house the birds tend to flick moss off the roof and gutters in search of food. You can get porcelain paving that looks like wood, maybe this could be an alternative. Personally I would get some advice from a few local landscapers to see what is possible and look at drainage.

Hi Eve, It looks like you have a very nice blank canvas to work with! The trees are far enough away from the house, and as you said, they don't cast too much shade so they shouldn't be a problem at all. I agree with what was said previously. You should observe the garden space in different times of the day and decide where is it that you would like to sit (Maybe it is the case that you would like to sit with your morning coffee in a spot, and have a barbecue at lunch time at another spot). Once you choose where the seating areas will be, you can determine the planting places. There are plants for every situation from deep shade to hot sun, so this is not a limitation, you will just have to match the right plants with the right places. The only thing with planting that you should consider is if you do want to grow vegetables. Then a place in the sun is advised. I offer a garden sketch that can be done online- a drawing not to scale that gives you an idea of how best to divide your garden to cater for your needs and tastes. This is very cost effective way to have an initial idea when you are stuck. Please do let me know if you are interested and good luck with your new garden!

Hi there, the first thing to do is to work out how you want to use your garden - terrace? For how many? Lawn? Veggies? Herbs? Pergola? Big flower beds? BBQ?

I could go on, but will rein myself in..

A list of priorities will hep, followed by some ideas of materials that you like - limit this to three e.g. gravel, render walls and grey / green slabs...
