Tailor made curtains - help

Hi All,

I recall a long while ago that Bentall's Kingston Surrey used to have a bespoke curtain design department. They had heaps of material; someone who came round and measured up and then made and put up the curtains for you. This has since gone.

Im kind of lost on where to find a similar type of service. There are many "curtain designers" around. But would love some help for any one someone can recommend. Need silk/raw silk curtain choices and sheer net curtain choices.

Any advice for a lost soul? :(

As a starting point I would go to John Lewis as they have fabrics from lots of differrent brands / designers, as well as sheers and blinds. They will come out and put up poles and curtains etc (for a cost). Laura Ashley, Marks and Spencer and Dunelm will also make curtains etc, but the choice of fabrics might be more limited to their own brands. These stores generally will either have a comprehensive leaflet or web page telling you how to measure,so you can get an idea of the information needed. I’d do a search on the internet for “curtain shop” in your area and then visit to see what fabrics and services they offer. Finally there are plenty of online bespoke curtain and blind manufacturers.

Thanks Kikiamack - tried John Lewis. But they have no silk/raw silk curtains at all. I did spot Dunelm so will check them out. Many thanks for the advice...

When hanging curtains for clients I always have the hems just hovering above the floor so would consider your curtains too short. From the photo it looks like you cannot lower the pole position, so letting down the hems is your best solution. Leaving the curtains in situ, carefully unpick the hem and iron out crease lines (ironing board can be positioned at the window), you can then turn a new minimum hem using iron-on hem tape. Ideally your curtains should be no more than an inch off the floor to give them the made-to-measure look.

Hi, I personally wouldn't go for any type of blind and especially not white, the whole room is that colour and it's going to look really cold. Shutters are fabulous, other people have mentioned these, but the custom made shape is going to cost! However, i think the cheapest and most sumptuous option is the curtains on two cafe rods covering the whole gable. If you are after a cheap way of doing these, you'd be surprised at who you can find on Facebook in your local area! After all, we are only talking about the material and thermal backing for one long window. They don't need header tapes, just a small pocket for a cafe rod on each side. So they are basic in their sewing requirements.

Perhaps something neutral, but maybe wait until you’ve chosen a wall colour? I feel the pain about curtains for a large bay - we have one in our living room. I bought new curtains last year - after thinking I needed to go down the made to measure route, I managed to find a couple of good options in John Lewis and Dunelm by buying their extra long and extra wide curtains. They ended up being ever so slightly too long, so I had them shortened (only cost £40!!). The curtains were still not cheap, but they were loads cheaper than made to measure. It might be worth a look???

Found a few local bespoke curtain makers. Wondering if anyone has purchased curtain material from More Curtains promoted from HOUZZ?

I don't know if this helps, but I ordered made to measure curtains from curtainsmadeforfree.co.uk and their service was fantastic. They gave plenty of useful advice pre-sales, the curtains came quickly and was very impressed with the quality. The only thing is that you have to measure yourself (and hang poles if not already in situ) but they give a lot of helpful advice if you need it. The fabric selection is very extensive and you can order samples for a small cost.

Hi Karen, it certainly gives me an avenue. What I am finding so far is that there are alot of many good independent curtain "designers" around. However, they charge a premium. But on the offside, have limited range of material. So far 3 out of 3 lack a silk/raw silk range and even the composite silks are limited in their specific ranges. Ill have a look at curtainsmadeforfree.co.uk and check out options for getting them up! Much appreciated for your advice! :) Ran
