Where to place hob, cooker hood and sink in ICF House
We are building a house using ICF. This means that we have to specify all outlets and inlets at the design stage. It is difficult and expensive to insert these once the concrete has been poured and set! I, therefore, need to decide on my kitchen design now.
I was planning on having units on two walls. I have attached a couple of pictures of the kind of setup I envisage. On one wall I will have base units and wall cupboards, Between the worktop and wall units for most of the wall will be a non-opening window, similar to the one in the picture below. On the other wall would be my tall units, tall fridge and tall freezer. I cannot see anywhere to place a hob. I would not want it under the window as it would get covered in grease and splatters when cooking. I was thinking of putting it on the island. We are having MVHR and would need a cooker hood to extract the grease and prevent it from getting into the system. However, the kitchen has a vaulted ceiling and I wonder if a ceiling extractor would be efficient at that height and a cooker hood would have to be huge and incongruous in view of the vaulted ceiling? I was looking at pop up side extractors but the recycle ones are not said to be very efficient and the ducted ones would involve ducting under the floor, which will have under floor heating, a concrete screed and tiles! Any suggestions gratefully received.

Unless you want to make a feature of the hood above the island I wouldn't go down that path because it will be quite dominant to the space. We installed something similar to this Siemens one that extracts down through the floor on a recent project and we had an MVHR installed for that property too. Instead of ICF the property was made from SIPS panels. Good for you for trying something different!

Comments (58)@Damian Farrell, the induction hob I've had since... what.. July or August? I think? Not that long. Took a while to get used to it, having always cooked on gas. Advantages: very quick, easy to clean, you can let it automatically turn off after a certain time. Disadvantages: sometimes the pans make annoying noises, has something to do with the resonance of the magnetic field I think? I don't know. But it can be a bit annoying. Make:Schott-Ceran, but the downdraft is from a Dutch company called Airo Design. Don't think they export to other countries. Anyway, almost every company does them now. Bora gets good reviews, Miele, Siemens... The videos on youtube show that the steam goes down and you think, yeah... right... But it really does go down. Comments (8)We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! Comments (31)Thank you all so much. We have had months and months of conversation and research on this issue and I'm just so tired of it. Now we've paid the deposit for the kitchen and the builder is booked for the extension work to start we're feeling the pressure in terms of making decisions. You've all helped to encourage me to reconsider all options again with fresh eyes (we put the whole thing on hold for a coupld of months as we're unable to make a decision). The round chimney is my preference of the two and I prefer it to any other chimney style extractor. My overall preference would be a flush ceiling extractor but this is ultimately down to what the builder says and how this could fit alongside the beam. A venting hob is a compromise for us, which I'm sure we'd get used to very quickly as you always do once things are done. We have already designed the kitchen layout and planned where everything will go so it will take some thinking to lose the drawer/cupboard below the hob. It's exhausting going over and over the same pert of the project and never quite finding a conclusion we're happy with. There are two exterior doors, one either of the utility. We also have a front door. and five
patio doors on the other sides of the house! The idea of having an outside entrance in the cloakroom is that we plan to have a dog shower in this! Its a big like a Jack and Jill bathroom, you just have to remember to lock both doors! - 7 years ago
