Any alternative ideas to removing dividing wall?

What to do?

Need to bring light into the second room. Do not want to use mirrors or lighting to do this and not sure about knocking dividing wall.

If we remove the wall, we will lose that cosy private room with fireplace and armchair against the dividing wall.

If we don't remove the dividing wall, the room on the otherside remains dark and leaves us with two lounges.

Grateful for any alternative ideas for this design dilema!

Hey... We had the same problem and solved it by removing the wall and replacing it with a smaller central (ish) wall that houses a double sided fireplace... So the front room is still fairly private and cosy (although not completely closed off), we didn’t lose the space for the fireplace and we get light in... The room on the other side is our dining room and the fire can be enjoyed from both sides. It wasn’t the easiest or cheapest solution, but we love the result and the pain of getting the fire in was definitely worth it!

Nistha, what a great idea! It does look lovely, We do have a fireplace in the lounge with the windows. However, the central wall idea gives it the edge and will consider it.

Or a magnetic child safety lock for kitchen cabinets from Mothercare or Lidl for example. It would be affordable, invisible and would last a long time. It would come with instructions and a template for drilling a small hole on the inside to insert the magnet. You just swipe the enclosed magnet over the outer surface to open.

We've just fitted a Gotham 900 electric fire from Flamerite. We had a gas fire but didn't often use it as we don't really need extra heating in the room so it was just dark and lifeless. This fire has a great flame effect which can be used without heat, but it can also pump out heat when needed. It looks very like the long fire in the photo - but the one in the photo looks like gas. We wanted a gas fire with lights so that it could glow when it wasn't turned on but apparently very few gas fires do this as, when the fire is turned on, it blows the bulbs! Thanks everyone for your comments. We felt the same that the wall being removed would make a positive difference. So we got it confirmed it wasn't load bearing and removed it yesterday. Already it makes a difference. We were set on have white spindles with a grey stained oak banister however we are now considering glass to help keep the open feel. What's your thoughts? Good old spindles or glass (Not too modern style) For info the carpet on the stairs will be light grey and the hall flooring a darker colour.

Any ideas how to "beautify" scarred brick wall in the back house

Would love your opinions and advice on how to make the back wall that seen better days look better. We are gojng to remove old pipes and brick up the window but it won't look very nice plus old "scars" from old remodelling are seen anyway. I was considering cladding and maybe to cover the side and front of the extension as well (the patio doors will be replaced with aluminium grey bifold doors almost double the length). Or are there any other genius ideas how to make it look good.

Repacking a solid wall with a glass one can also be an option - check its load bearing status before you start knocking things about - as you may need a beam and SE Calculations etc

I was also going to suggest carving a high top window out of the wall (friends have done this but put a modern leaded glass window in) to put glass in would be the cheapest option.

Alternatives:-

Sun tunnel (depends on the roof above but worth checking out)

Also,

We had our previous lounge that had internal bifold doors we could open up to let light in and at night, close for a cosy feel.

You could also look at sliding screens (Japanese style but modern) and also have bifolds with glass so they let light in during the day but still give you privacy. Best solution for the most light

Ps just re-read that you have a chair etc against the wall.
You can get fixed partions with glass in and a single door or slider that goes into the fixed panel so you can still have the light and keep your chair etc in place

We are putting a crittal style panel (with doors in the middle) between our two reception rooms. So about one third of the wall will be solid and the rest will be glazed panels. The frames will be made of wood not steel so a lot cheaper than Crittal.

We were in same position...we knocked down wall just wide enough so no need for RSJ as it was a supporting wall. Put 4 door bi fold door inbetween. Not finished decorating yet so bit bare! (Protective film still on glazed glass..not taken off yet).

Any alternative ideas to removing dividing wall?
